Floors and Scales

Floors and Scales

The scale, like the floor, has always been uneven.
But they are both slow creators,
and credit goes
to the one who levels fastest despite the joists.
So we grope against the dead load
for the nearest hand,
press it to the beams,
and on the pans,
and call the pressing justice.

Then, there is the sorting into containers.
Processed into piles by nothing they had done.
Two boxes to provide a story.
This heap is done to,
this heap does.

I have plenty to answer for.
But not this malfeasance.
And no, my saying so doesn’t prove guilt.
My box comes with the mouth stitched.
The other with an infallible
and vainglorious mouth.

But, what neither heap nor hand admits
is that words are the cantilever.
The pressed,
who are allowed to bypass the fulcrum
and go directly to the pan
have not abolished pressing.
They practice what they learned best
from those they name.

Each of us names the flesh we were never owed.
We don’t believe in equilibrium anymore.
No one goes down to the posts or the blocking.
What we owe each other
is to see the pointer and read the measure.
But instead, we make a gesture,
call ourselves right,
and go sit in our pile
in our box. by @midagedpoetry
