🌴LOS ANGELES – Korea is Not a War Base: Dispatches from the 2026 Jaju Solidarity Brigade

📅: Saturday, November 7th
⏰: Doors at 1:30pm / Program starts at 2:00pm
📍: @midnightbooksla new location – 607 E 4th St, Los Angeles
❤️‍🔥 RSVP: tinyurl.com/socaljsb

Back in August, 26 anti-war and anti-imperialist organizers, artists, media workers, and educators traveled across South Korea as part of the first-ever Jaju Solidarity Brigade (jaju / 자주 meaning sovereignty in Korean). Together, we toured military bases, visited historic sites, and held exchanges with local organizers to see firsthand the true impacts of US military occupation.

On November 7, organizers with Nodutdol, @dsa_la, @bayan_socal, and @qiaocollective will share what we’ve learned from the struggles for Korea’s sovereignty through this delegation. Please join us for a family friendly afternoon of political education at Midnight Books’ new location, featuring a drumming performance, photo exhibit, limited-edition merch from the brigade, and more!

See you there! by @midnightbooksla

Assalamualaikum! We are honored to have Dr. @rasulmiller and @brothercyrus this upcoming Friday evening at Jackson Market (Culver City) to lead a discussion around “The American Question.”

In the wake of October 7 and the ongoing genocide in Palestine, much of the political conversation has centered on how to pressure the United States to rein in Israel. In other words, it calls on the world’s foremost imperial power, itself responsible for mass slaughter, to transform itself into an ally of the masses. This is a losing strategy, and it raises a deeper question: What is America’s role in the political order we seek to challenge, and what does it mean to confront the empire?

Bringing radical Black Muslim and global Islamist understandings of America into conversation, this event explores how these traditions understand the “enemy,” envision victory, and strategize toward it. What can we learn from their respective approaches to allegiance, mass mobilization, and building popular power?

From Palestine and Syria to the limits of American electoral politics, we will examine America’s role in sustaining imperial power, the forces capable of confronting it, and what it would take to make American power answerable to those who oppose it.

What does it mean to confront the enemy, and what would it take to win? by @midnightbooksla

Feliz Día de los Difuntos! Yesterday we came together to pay tribute to our loved ones, ancestors, revolutionaries, & those currently incarcerated in El Salvador.

We made it our own starting with a procession, beautiful poetry by Rossana Perez, building our community altar, then creating a mural 💐

Grief & healing is resistance 🕯️ Creating our own spaces as Central Americans is incredibly empowering. We have beautiful traditions that need continuing. May they always 🔥 by @midnightbooksla

🌱 Indigenous Wisdom for Our Human and Environmental Crises 🌱

The land remembers.

Join us TUESDAY 11/17, 5:30–7:30 PM at our NEW HOME in Little Tokyo (607 E. 4th St.) for a night of radical reimagining. Brenda Contreras of @coyotl.macehualli breaks down environmental justice, stewardship, and mutual aid rooted in L.A.'s Eastside and Kirk Scirto takes it further: what would it mean to build a "Green U.S.," a nation-within-a-nation grounded in deep democracy, equality, and sustainability?
Praxis not just theory!

The third and final part of the war/wilayah trilogy: The War We Must Become.

This took me a long time to arrive at. It was not something I set out to write all at once. The three parts gradually revealed themselves to me, almost as though one thought had been waiting for the next to become clear. I am deeply grateful that I was given the time, the vision, and the opportunity to follow that thought to its conclusion.

What began as a philosophical reflection became something more: an exploration of conscience, the surrender of the ego, and the transformation of individual conviction into collective resistance. The first war asks us to protect our conscience from a world that wants to possess it. The second asks us to surrender the arrogance through which we seek to possess the world. The third asks what we must become when those two struggles meet the reality of injustice.

There is another layer to this trilogy, one that I intend to return to and explore further. It also carries a symbolism of Wilayat al-Faqih, with each part reflecting, in its own way, a period or dimension of that intellectual and spiritual journey. It is both a personal philosophical and spiritual reflection and an attempt to engage with the meaning of Wilayat al-Faqih across its different periods. This is not a subject I consider exhausted by these pages; it is one I expect to revisit often.

Perhaps the thought that finally brought the trilogy together is this: we must never surrender our conscience, we must learn to surrender our arrogance, and we must become a force that refuses to leave others alone in their struggle.

The war we must never lose. The war we must lose. The war we must become. by @midnightbooksla

Last weekend, 79 mutual aid, community self defense, tenant, and street vendor groups delivered a simple demand to Councilmember Ysabel Jurado: Repeal Kevin de León’s racist 41.18 zones.

Ysabel assured us she would respond. Instead, she decided to continue protecting these racist zones.
