🧡 ABOUT MIDUNDO YA AMANI 🧡
A Word From The Founders @anu.a.rite and @bertinleader

In 2025, an urgent initiative came to be: Midundo Ya Amani — Born of a vision to create a network of peace building performing artists across the Grand Lakes Region.

We welcome you to join us on this journey to create and connect artists of change!

May the rhythm of our steps echo beyond this moment, carrying seeds of peace into every corner, where silence waits to be transformed into DANCE 🌱✨ by @midundoyaamani

This past chapter of the Midundo Ya Amani Programme in Nairobi, Kenya was yet another success, and our deepest gratitude goes out to everyone who made it possible.

We extend a huge and heartfelt thank you to our talented participants, whose energetic presence brought this vision to life.

To our dedicated team of teachers, @tambweabdoul, @nasrinism_, @bertinleader, and @anu.a.rite, and to the wider team, @ikonicdallaz and @zak_johnteh, thank you for your unwavering commitment. Your passion for dance, teaching and community was the heartbeat of our daily program.

Thank you to the local vendors of Kibera for the daily support that kept our programme running smoothly. We are also incredibly grateful to our regional partners for their vital work in East Africa: INUKA CULTURAL CENTER 🇰🇪 (@inuka_cultural_center: @salimrollins_ and @victorswithvictor), STREET DANCE FORCE COMPANY 🇺🇬 (@sdf), and INUKA DANCE COMPAGNY 🇨🇩 (@hadisiurbanfestival).

To @aidahhaze (@bythebaobabs), thank you for the stunning photo and video documentation that so perfectly captured the energy of this chapter. And finally, none of this would have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors, @projects_for_peace and @atbennington, who made the realization of this vision possible.

Our experiences these past three months mark the start of a longer journey. The exchanges and connections we’ve made are seeds planted to grow into the future, within us and our communities.

💃 In 2025, the project "Midundo Ya Amani ('Rhythms of Peace'): Dance for Sustainable Peace in the Grand Lac Region" demonstrated how movement and creative expression can transcend deep-seated social barriers to foster regional harmony.

💬 Reflecting on the Experience: "Physical, emotional, and social safe spaces make change possible. When we feel safe, we can show our most honest, joyful, creative, and generous selves. Dance helps us create these circles of trust and belonging. It encourages a deep sense of unity and harmony, both within and between us. This leads us to say that Midundo Ya Amani wasn’t about teaching dance. It was about using dance to guide young people to trust themselves and others, to realize the power of the tools within and around them, and to show up as peacebuilders for their community—to recognize their role as the caretakers of tomorrow, starting today. Midundo Ya Amani was a reminder of the power of dance as a catalyst for personal, interpersonal, and social transformation. As dancers, we speak to humans beyond the social barriers of race, religion, gender, and language. As artists, we have the power to circulate ideas that challenge the normalized social orders and power structures. Through this program, we witnessed how creative expression can unlock healing, inspire leadership, and offer a path forward in a region that has long suffered from conflict."

It’s truly amazing how dance connects a group of once strangers. In caring company, a chosen family forms —offering safety and support for each person to show up & discover their full potential.

The first chapter of Midundo Ya Amani found its home in Mbikko town of Jinja, Uganda, hosted by @the_sdf_crew_uganda. For 14 days, 14 participants and 5 choreographers engaged in critical discussions, reflective exercises, movement classes, somatic explorations, a nature excursion and performance process.

The point of these sessions was not to train participants to be good dancers. They were already well-versed in various styles.

More fundamentally, Midundo Ya Amani is a call to deepen and awaken — For each dancer to realise their own power to influence change as a young artist in society, and practice building peace within their circles of influence 💪🏾🧡✨

Made possible through the collaboration and support of: @atbennington @projects_for_peace @the_sdf_crew_uganda @inuka_cultural_center @hadisiurbanfestival by @midundoyaamani
