✨ Some people come into our lives and change everything.

For Fedwa Harrak @midwifefedwa, Community Midwife, Midwifery Lecturer, and all round shining star 🌟 , it was the midwife who cared for her during one of the hardest moments of her life who lit the spark. 💫

In this beautiful episode of Midwifery Love, Life and Learning, Fedwa chats with Sheena Byrom sharing her journey into midwifery - a story rooted in being seen, being held, and being inspired to give that same gift to others. This is ‘Midwives Work’.

Her passion for this work? You feel it in every single word.

If you’ve ever wondered why midwives do what they do, this episode will remind you.

☕️ Little coffee break today at @astrid__bakery .

I treated myself to a pain au chocolat, a fresh cream pastry, and a cappuccino — and it was honestly a 10/10! 🤎

As midwives, we spend so much time caring for others that it’s important to take a moment to recharge too.

What’s your favourite coffee shop treat? ☕️✨

Honoured to have my article featured in the British Journal of Midwifery 🩵

This piece explores the vital importance of nutrition during the first 1000 days of life — from pregnancy through early childhood — and how it can shape long-term health and wellbeing for future generations.

As midwives, we play a crucial role in promoting evidence-based, compassionate, and culturally sensitive nutritional care. Supporting women and families to make informed dietary choices is not only part of our professional responsibility, but also an important step towards reducing health inequalities and improving public health outcomes.

Healthy beginnings create healthier futures 🌱

THE BENEFITS OF MIDWIFERY UNITS ✨

I’ve shared our article in @the_practising_midwife_journal exploring how Midwifery Units (MUs) can offer safe, holistic, and empowering birth experiences—yet remain underused by racialised women.

MUs support physiological birth through a bio-psycho-social model of care:
✔️ One-to-one midwifery support
✔️ Calm, private environments
✔️ Non-intrusive monitoring with safe escalation if needed

For many racialised women, these spaces can offer something even deeper—dignity, cultural safety, and a sense of control in a system where trust has often been eroded by structural racism.

But despite the evidence, barriers remain:
• Risk assessments that disproportionately exclude
• Bias and assumptions about who MUs are “for”
• Limited access to information
• Cultural beliefs linking safety to doctor-led care

There is growing evidence that women with intermediate risk factors can also safely birth in MUs—yet guidelines and practice don’t always reflect this.

In this article, we also share a real practice example showing how culturally sensitive, evidence-based conversations can empower women to make informed choices about their care.

This is about more than birthplace.
It’s about equity, autonomy, and transforming maternity services.

We are midwives and student midwives who want to practise midwifery.

So we are coming together to share the truth about midwifery.

Midwifery-led care is one of the most evidence-based approaches to maternity care improving outcomes for women and babies, while reducing unnecessary intervention.

This is supported by global research and Cochrane evidence.

And yet this is not the story that is often told. Midwifery is frequently misrepresented.
The evidence is not always shared. And this shapes how women understand their choices.

At the same time, maternity services are under pressure.
There is a national shortage of midwives. Our student midwives are training for years committing to this profession while facing uncertainty about their future.

Because women deserve accurate, evidence-based information.
And a maternity system that truly supports them.

We stand alongside the growing conversation—highlighted by Leah Hazard’s campaign calling for safe working hours for midwives.

This is our voice.

Sharing the evidence.
Challenging fear-based narratives.
And bringing the conversation back to truth.

A day in London #vlog #dayoffvlog by @midwifefedwa

Just like the Thames, every journey flows in its own way 🌊✨

Pregnancy, birth, and motherhood aren’t about perfection — they’re about movement, change, and trusting the process.

Some moments feel calm, others uncertain… but every step is part of your story.

As a midwife, I’m here to walk alongside you — offering support, reassurance, and guidance through every stage 💛

You don’t have to have it all figured out — just take it one step at a time.
