🏛️ Rebirth II is coming to Kickstarter 16.02.2027 🏛️

Rebirth II is a new standalone game in the Rebirth series. Rebirth II presents two new standalone maps: Greece and Italy. The tile laying heart of Rebirth remains the same; players draw a tile and then place it on the board, but each map takes the Rebirth spirit into a new direction. Both maps make use of the new City-State system, where the map is split into various self-governing regions.

The game is designed by Reiner Knizia. The gorgeous box art has been created by the talented Vesna « vesner » Redesiuk and the illustrations and graphic design are being worked on by Max Kosek, Christopher Borg, and Mark Casha.

🪨 Going farther sounds like a good idea… until you remember you’re paying for the trip with your building materials.

🏛️ That’s one of the things I like about For the Gods! We’re sailing around the Aegean, building temples and competing for glory, but the stones used to travel are the same ones we need when we arrive. And because building generally requires stones of the same rank, those five stones behind your screen don’t always give you quite as much freedom as you’d hope.

🎒 Building comes with another problem. Every stone you add to a temple leaves your bag, making that temple taller and influencing what you’ll draw on future turns. Keep building and eventually you won’t have enough stones left to draw a full hand, which is also what brings the game towards its end.

⚡ The gods complicate things a little further. Their stones can enter your bag and later be used to dedicate temples, giving you different abilities. They’re useful and don’t change the basic move, build and draw structure too much.

👀 There’s plenty of information sitting on the table. Everyone only has six stones of each rank, so the temples tell you something about what their owners can still do. And nobody needs to destroy your beautiful temple. Building a taller one next door works just fine.

🤔 I do wonder how the repetition will hold up over many more plays. Your basic turn doesn’t change much, although I also like that the rules quickly get out of the way and leave you to think about your stones, the board and what everyone else is building.

😊 We’d happily play again, especially with three or four players. Just don’t get too attached to having the tallest temple. Pride can be rather expensive.

Cozy night with potatoes in Yotei by @yotei.boardgame | @mightyboards.

I love having games like this in my collection. It is not inventing any new mechanics, but it delivers immersion and an experience elegantly.

Yotei is a tableau builder from Mighty Boards, and you are building a town at the foot of Mt. Yotei in Hokkaido. There are three tiers of cards in the middle of the table, and potatoes are everything. They are your money, your bids, and your points. You place workers on cards, harvest, and race for the star cards that end the game.

Yotei feels like Castle Combo in how you pick cards from the grid, the engine building feels like Splendor, and the race to the top tier feels like Gizmos.

I love how simple this mashup is, plus the hidden bidding with potatoes. Placing workers on cards to reserve them sounds simple, but there is so much strategy in it. You can grab a card for your engine, and even if you cannot pay the potatoes you can take a card just to deprive others. This cute little game has real player interaction. There are mind games with potato bids, and you can temporarily juice resource requirements by placing workers face down on cards. These simple ideas stretch the depth beyond just picking a card, and it is so distilled and unbloated.

My only complaint is that you might want the deluxe version or upgraded components. The cardboard potatoes are tiny and you have to be careful unpunching them. The cardboard standees might get loose after repeated plays since both the base and the standee are cardboard. I am looking at Etsy upgrades for myself. But this game is only $20, so I also cannot complain too much. A 4 card mini expansion costs $15 and at $20 this is exceptional value. But if you have the option, go for deluxe.

Like I said, Yotei does not invent anything new. But when you have similar games on the shelf and you reach for one game, that is it, that is the feature you are after. And the feature is called heart serum that fills your heart with joy and good vibes. Yotei is just that.

⛵ We’d really like to sail over to that island. Unfortunately, the stones we need to get there are also the stones we’d quite like to build with. Decisions, decisions…

🏛️ That’s something we’ve been running into quite a bit in For the Gods! We’re sailing around ancient Greece, building temples for the Olympian gods and trying to claim the most glory. Everyone else is doing the same, of course, so we’re also keeping a rather close eye on what they’re building.

🎲 On your turn, you move, build and draw. That’s basically it. You have five stones hidden behind your screen, and sailing costs one for every sea route you travel. Whatever you spend getting somewhere is no longer available for building once you arrive. Maybe that nearby island isn’t so interesting after all…

⚡ Establish a new temple in a region with god stones and you can add one of them to your bag. Draw it later and you can dedicate a temple to that god, activating their power. Depending on which gods are in the game, they can help you move or build, change temples, interfere with other players, or get you some extra glory.

🏆 But building a temple isn’t enough. At the end, the tallest temple in each region gets the main reward, with some regions also rewarding second place. So you’re constantly asking yourself whether your temple is tall enough. Add another stone just to be safe? Or use it somewhere else and hope nobody comes along with plans for an extension?

🤔 That’s where we’re finding more to think about than the move, build, draw structure first suggests. The stones you spend on travelling affect what you can build right now, while the god stones entering your bag change what might be available on later turns.

👉 For the Gods! is one of the @mightyboards games they’re bringing to Spiel this year. We still want to get more plays in before properly judging it, so we’ll save the rest for our full review. Coming soon!
