🗻 COMING SOON! If you’re missing Essen, we’re bringing the best games to your favourite UK retailers. Yōtei is one such game. A charming, characterful tableau builder with some sharp and interactive edges.

Build your perfect town using potatoes as the primary currency. Grab cards from a shared market, bidding on them in secret, and then build them into your tableau.

Designed and illustrated by a team based near Mount Yōtei itself, and published by the unstoppable @mightyboards, this one has already received glowing acclaim from the gang at Shut Up & Sit Down. 🍐

SPIEL Essen is almost here, so it’s time for the final six games in our series!

We’ve already shared 18 games that have caught our eye, but there was still room for seafaring exploration, old-fashioned pharmacies, potato-powered town building, fiery Catalan festivals, winemaking — and one chaotic night of tapas.

Here are our final six games to look out for at SPIEL Essen 2026… 🔥

⛵ UNCHARTED PASSAGE: REMASTERED

This might be one of the less obvious games on our list, which is exactly why we want to seek it out. Uncharted Passage: Remastered is a compact 1–2 player exploration game in which you have just 12 rounds — representing one year — to chart routes around the world and complete as many missions as possible. Each month brings different events and threats, while your limited resources have to be divided between sailing speed, crew stamina and armament.

We really like the sound of that constant balancing act: travel quickly, keep your crew functioning or make sure you’re prepared when pirates turn up. At around 30–40 minutes, this feels like exactly the sort of smaller game we love discovering amongst the huge Essen releases. It will be available at the Playte booth in Hall 6.

⚗️ TINCTURA

Running an 18th/19th-century pharmacy is already an unusual enough theme to get our attention, but it’s the way Tinctura handles time that really intrigues us. Behind your screen you secretly plan how you’ll spend the hours of each day — working in the pharmacy, heading into town or venturing into the forest — before deciding how best to use those precious hours when the moment arrives.

You’ll gather medicinal plants, make treatments, improve your skills and train apprentices while trying to squeeze as much as possible out of every day. We love games where time itself feels like a resource, so this sounds like it could produce some deliciously difficult efficiency decisions.

🥔 YOTEI

Build a town beneath Mt Yotei, manage your limited workers and bid with potatoes. Frankly, they had us at potatoes.

Set at the foot of Mt Yotei in Hokkaido, Yotei has you expanding your land, developing a charming town and deciding how best to use your limited workforce — while potato

#mysterymonday🎲 again! 🎃 The theme “Investigator/ Detective” this week was chosen by the community. This one is about paranormal investigators! We had to do a spooky one. Anyone play this one before?

Can you guess what game?? It is super cool and has amazing use of the box and great table presence!

The theme last week was “Box Organization” and we NEEDED to show off how stunning and fun it was to organize ART SOCIETY!! @mitchwgames @mightyboards What you can’t see from the video (yes… we had to post it again!) is that there is a velvety material in the inside… such a beautiful touch and it helps our paintings to be stored properly in the box.

Thanks everyone for all your support and this community is the greatest! Follow us for more!

🎲 Trying to figure out which games to check out at SPIEL Essen? We’ve already played a few, so here’s what we think.

We’ve managed to get our hands on quite a few of this year’s releases before the fair. Which is great, of course, although it hasn’t exactly helped us shorten our wishlist 😅

We thought we’d split them into two posts, starting with nine games on the more strategic side of things.

🏺 There’s quite a mix here, from pottery workshops and political campaigns to floating settlements and building temples for the Greek gods. I mean, nobody can accuse board games of running out of subjects just yet.

👀 You’ll find our thoughts with each photo, including what we liked and what we weren’t so sure about. And there’s a tenth game waiting on the last slide, because apparently nine wasn’t enough 🙃

🔗 We’ve also written full reviews of these games on tabletopping.games, if you’d like to know a bit more before Essen.

Have you played any of these already? Or is there a game coming to SPIEL that you think we should check out?

🏺 NÍJAR

Building a pottery workshop sounds straightforward enough. You add wheels, kilns and glazing areas, then put your craftswomen to work.

Except you start with seven workers and finish with just five, while your workshop keeps getting bigger. At some point, another improvement isn’t nearly as useful as actually making and selling pots.

I like that trade-off, especially with other players competing for actions and customers. Just be prepared for some lengthy turns if everyone wants to calculate every possibility.

☢️ ASHES: BLACKOUT PROTOCOL

Humanity has survived a nuclear war, and now we’re in charge of making the surface habitable again. No pressure.

You’re developing an underground colony, rescuing survivors and contributing to the Phoenix Project. What I like is how the different systems connect. Improving one part of your colony often helps somewhere else.

There’s a lot to keep track of, though. This is definitely one for people who enjoy heavier eurogames. It took us a couple of plays to really see what the game has to offer, but I’m glad we gave it t

It’s 11.30pm, you’re all tired, but you all want one game before bed. What board game do you reach for?

For us, it was Rebirth, and my 31st play. Thriving burning the midnight oil, I romped home a victory.

Now the other question I have is on a scale of 100, how excited for Rebirth 2 are you?

2–4 Wikingerhorden treten gegeneinander an.
