There’s another reason I’ve been quieter the past few years, along with working on The Montessori Kitchen with @montessori_nduoma, which might be hard to read about (or, I hope, validating) to those who have struggled with fertility and pregnancy loss. But I’ve wanted to share my experience because it was so meaningful when other people I admire like @yasminkhanstories wrote about theirs publicly, filling the void between how heartbreakingly common miscarriage is (1 in 4 pregnancies, by most estimates) and how hard it can still be to talk about.

During my last year or so at @Food52 (and after our daughter’s miraculously straightforward birth in 2019), I went through 3 back-to-back pregnancy losses, probably due to adenomyosis—a cousin of endometriosis that invades the uterine walls and makes it hard for embryos to grow—then IVF to try to tame it. (A tip: Some states mandate coverage from insurers—I was lucky to work in New York, where larger companies have to cover up to 3 rounds of IVF. @resolveorg has a helpful map I’ll link in my bio.)

In attempting to control the thing I couldn’t, I made a lot of elusive lifestyle changes, including cutting dairy and gluten and aiming for “30 plants a week,” then later micro-managing my blood sugar through gestational diabetes. I recently had the chance to write about it all, and about the moment I was finally able to feed myself exactly what I wanted, in @bonappetitmag’s ground-breaking (and now Beard-winning with @halibey 🏅✨) column The Fourth Trimester, launched by @hanaasbrink, edited by @emmalaperruque and @kelsey.youngman, and illustrated by @drorcof.

The thing I wanted in this particular fourth trimester was hot, crunchy, salty, immediate, and absolutely wrecked with dairy and gluten, a shortcut grilled cheese inspired by @mandasims and @theednalewisfoundation, and the latest in a lifelong quest to stop burning the outside before the middle melts. The full recipe and story are on @bonappetitmag and in my bio.

My heart is with everyone still in the struggle, and I’m here in the DMs for solidarity and anything else I can help with ❤️

Proof of life, proof of book 📕🤗 I’ve been quiet here lately—you’re looking at one big reason why (there’s another big reason too, but that’s for another post ❤️).

I’m so happy I get to say this: The Montessori Kitchen—part-cookbook, part-parenting book, a practical, tender guide for parents and children to play and learn together through cooking—will be here this October. You can preorder it anywhere books are sold (and linked in my bio). 🍊🥑🍅🥬🥕🍒🍌🎉

I had the honor of writing it with Junnifa Uzodike @montessori_nduoma, co-author of international bestsellers The Montessori Baby and The Montessori Child (and the soothing voice in my head whenever I’m not sure how to parent).

A few things to know about the book:

🍎 60+ simple, wholesome, unexpectedly interactive recipes for children to tackle new skills while developing a healthy relationship with food (swipe through for peeks 👀). Some were shared by families from the global Montessori community, from Jamaica to Singapore to Portugal.

🫛 The book grows with your family—starting with easy, nourishing foods to eat during pregnancy through baby’s first fistfuls of vegetables to young children developing independent peeling and smashing and even omelet-flipping skills of their own.

🍰 We worked with the incredible team at @workmanpub and talented photographer @ashleylima to bring the book to life. Kim Grenawitzke, feeding expert at @solidstarts, generously reviewed the early chapters for added safety and peace of mind. We’re honored to have stamps of approval from @alicelouisewaters (a former Montessori teacher herself!), @doriegreenspan, @mollyyeh, @chocolateforbasil, @themontessorinotebook, Judi Orion @ami_montessori, and @ourmontessorilife.

Having spent much of the pandemic in the kitchen with my then-toddler, the core message of Montessori resonated deeply for me: Young children are capable of much more than we realize, if we give them the chance. And the kitchen is one of the most fascinating places to learn, play, and bond.

I hope this book—and its tips, pep talks, and realistic, repeatable recipes—makes it easier and more joyful for families all over to experience the same.

Some personal-professional news: After 13 wild, scrappy, inspiring, dream-career years at @Food52 working with the very best people, I’m moving on to take on new projects and connect more with my local community in the SF Bay Area.

This was one of my last Genius Recipes for Food52—on top of sharing a surprising recipe from a cookbook author or chef each month, I started boldly demonstrating how to take their genius even further with a new recipe of my own.

The inspiration here was @yeungmancooking’s creamy mushroom soup—completely vegan, incredibly lush, no rubbery mushrooms! And for my take, I borrowed Wil’s smarts to make an artichoke & green chile riff like the iconic half & half at @duartestavern.

The artichoke crispies on top are a highlight, inspired by Carciofi alla Giudia, @thefullhelping’s latest book The Vegan Week, and @helenr’s flawless 1-ingredient appetizer (marinated artichokes, roasted).

More new things to come, and if you’d like to work on something together, reach out! It’s the best time in a baker’s dozen years.

Thanks go to @_alemora for tipping me off to Wil’s recipe, @billyskog for ultra-thorough recipe testing & styling, @emziemski for edits & pep talks, and @tymecham and @hedgehedge for lovely photos & props in pics 2 & 3. taken in Bay Area, California by @miglorious

Messing around with @miglorious @food52’s whole orange cake recipe... 🍊🌶️❤️‍🔥

3:1 citrus mix of naval oranges to kumquats from @yuzu_lemons gives the base a complex & punchy citrus flavor. @ninewintersma hopped up the glaze with our chocolate cake #gochujang. Gotta love full circle usage. Super delicious!

For this week’s #geniusrecipe, Kristen Miglore (@miglorious) shares two creamy soups because soup season isn’t just a season. It’s a lifestyle. The first is a creamy mushroom soup from @yeungmancooking that uses cashew cream and thinly sliced potato to make it extra luscious. Kristen then uses that same technique to make a creamy artichoke and green chile soup. Watch the newest episode of Genius Recipe and get the recipe at the link in bio. #f52community #f52grams by @miglorious
