Mignon Steele, ‘Smart Tablet’, 2024, pulped office paper, gathered papers, 26 x 24 x 2 cm @mignon_steele

This work is on show as part of Mignon Steele: ‘Matter of Times’

Closing Sun, June 28.
Enquiries: James@jenningskerr.com.au

“Through her observations of images and places, Steele has been able to make contemporary tablets and discs. A new artefact that speaks to her history alongside that of the landscapes she takes in. As I conclude writing, I notice the Blue Moon rising and recall my discussions with Steele about her naming the ‘Tranquility Disc’ after the Sea of Tranquility on the surface of the Moon. She might be looking up at the stars or walking in the sun and looking down at the life in the rock pools, but it is always with an awe for the world around. Pebbles, grass seeds, dust and dirt, paper, watercolour, and rust. The list goes on as Steele allows her times to feed into these sculptural diaries. Compounding science diagrams seen as a kid, or Saharan geoglyphs that grabbed her in years past, with natures ability to sculpt salt lakes, coastal cliffs or the surface of the moon. All these images mashing together in her mind like a pulped memory, mixing like the matter in her plastic buckets. Pressed and squeezed into the pulp. Steele is open and receptive to her everyday. Everything can be embedded into her forms and this means that papers and cartons land in her studio. Often gifted by friends or lifted from the mundane pile of bills. A wonderful new topography. There is both control and chaos in a dialogue of macro and micro stimuli. Steele shows her ability to steer her
material with a beautiful and poetic touch. Once the pulped note is pulled from the pocket, it is illegible and knotted with lint and thread from the washing machine. It was read previously and the message absorbed. Its sentiment is carried in the new form, not lost, but
reconfigured.”

‘Matter of Times’

June 5 - June 28, 2026
Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon from 10am-4pm or by appointment.

“Many of these works have a strong sense of the hand, with fingers pressed into their surfaces, squeezing and pushing the water out and through the screen, below the pulp. Sculpting by pressing her hand into the pulp. A wetness that is lost in the almost chalky outcome but
cherished in the artist’s process. It reminds me of the connection to the coast, its rock pools, the topographic and the ability of the ocean and wind to carve and sculpt into the shoreline. I think this is embedded in who the artist is and how she makes. Steele also makes
mention of salt lakes and river beds, meteorite craters and planetary terrain. In some ways the works respond directly to places but there is also a compounding of personal history, a willingness to allow symbols and images into the pulp subconsciously. The words and image on the found material is wiped, in order for it to be re-written or abstracted with these collected images that are embedded into her psyche.“

A nostalgic timelapse of my very first paper-moon-disc poured on the deck during a dreamy residency at @ganggangresidencies in 2024. I think I can almost see my thought processes unfolding as I move the pulp around. I currently have an exhibition showing these works of paper at Jennings Kerr Gallery in Robertson NSW, on until 28th June. by @mignon_steele
