Last month Migrant Voice published its damning report on the impact of extortionate visa fees and long settlement routes.

Here’s an explainer of our findings, and the true cost of this decision.

Today, we are publishing our report on the impact of visa costs on migrants’ lives.

We have spoken with over a hundred migrants who are paying (or have paid in the past) visa fees and the associated costs.

With a single person on a settlement route expecting to pay at least £2,593 at each renewal, the impact is horrific. The burden of visa costs affects every aspect of people’s lives: from work to social relationships, from mental health to planning for the future.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

Make your voice heard and join our campaign for a fairer immigration system. Share your experience of the impact of visa costs and demand change.

These findings show that Scotland is becoming more polarised on the question of immigration.

This report also highlights that those who had less social contact with migrants were far more likely to hold negative views of them.

Although of course only part of a wider picture, the research show the benefits to society if migrants and born and bred Brits had more social contact with one another.

The unknown breeds fear, which is remedied by education, not using migration as an electoral football to win votes and playing politics with people’s lives. by @migrantvoice

Migrant Voice, in partnership with Islington Refugee & Migrant Forum, is holding a discussion - Responding to Hate, on 1 October, 12–4pm be talking about the rise in hate crime, far-right activity and increasingly hostile rhetoric towards migrants and refugees, and what migrant and refufugee groups and individuals are seeing in their communities.

It is a scary time for those who are marginalised and we’d like to hear how this is affecting the people you support, whether you’ve noticed any changes, what you think needs to be done, and how we can work together on practical responses. The session will be informal and discussion-based, with lunch provided.

We stand with showracismtheredcard.

sunderlandcitycouncil’s decision to end anti-racism teaching in schools is a travesty.

To dismiss it as “politically charged” implies that racism is something to be defended, and dismissive of the very real racist attacks by far right thugs in recent weeks and months.

At the @tradesunioncongress conference today Nazek Ramadan spoke about the emboldenment of the far right and migrants’ experiences of hostility and its impact on them, while representing Migrant Voice.

Nazek called on the conference to continue supporting migrants, to challenge mis-information, to call on politicians to stop scapegoating migrants to distract from the real issues affecting people’s lives.

The panel stressed the need to challenge mis-information through educational activities including having difficult conversations.

They stressed the need to turn anger into hope and hope into actions. The panel concluded with “when we fight we win” message. by @migrantvoice

STATEMENT: Migrant Voice stands with the RNLI

This weekend, RNLI volunteers did what they have always done. They went out and brought
frightened people safely to shore. What happened next should shame this country. Their
boats, carrying more than 100 people rescued from a single dinghy, were turned away from
both Southampton and Portsmouth ports. Threats of legal action followed. Volunteers who
had spent hours saving lives were left waiting at sea while ports that should have received
them instead shut their doors.
We want to say plainly what we feel, gratitude, respect, and solidarity with every RNLI crew
member who launches a boat with no interest in anyone’s paperwork, only in whether they
are safe. These are people who give their time, unpaid, to pull strangers from the water,
including, this year alone, thousands of people who had nothing to do with the Channel at all,
and the small number who did, pulled from dinghies taking on water, children among them.
They do not ask who someone is or where they are from before they help. That is exactly as it
should be.
It is a disgrace that the people who did this, who saved lives without hesitation, were met
with denial, delay and legal threats instead of support, and that the same weekend saw
volunteers branded traitors by far right cowards, who hid behind masks to spread hate and
intimidation while they were out saving people, and abused online for the “crime” of doing
their job. We utterly condemn whoever made the decision to deny these boats access to
harbour, and everyone who created a climate in which lifesaving crews had to worry about
their own safety and reputation for bringing rescued people ashore. Leaving a lifeboat crew
exposed at sea, or exposed to a hostile crowd on land, because of who happened to be on
board, is indefensible.
The RNLI has never asked who deserves rescue. It has simply rescued. On behalf of migrants
and everyone who believes in a country that still helps people in danger, we say: thank you,
we stand with you, and we will not let this be normalised. by @migrantvoice
