When framing migration stories, we should never underestimate the power of words.
They not only fuel public debate but also influence policy.
And it is always people paying the price for bad policies.

A huge thank you to @migrants_rights_network for joining us last night & sharing some great resources from their ongoing research into Raids, Immigration Enforcement, and Local Authority Complicity.

Raids are not effective, and the presence of Immigration Enforcement on our streets does not make our communities safer; these are tools used to cultivate a climate of fear and it negatively impacts us all.

If you're keen to learn more & get involved, we'll be developing best practice to ensure that our community here in Folkestone is one which takes care of everyone.

$TONIGHT join us in Greatorex at 7pm for incredible panel sharing stories of rescue at sea, migration and human rights - speakers include: ⚖️ Sam Pordale, human rights campaigner with lived experience of displacement 🛟 Steven Martin, cofounder and director of the Channel Monitoring Project, which observes safety and legal rights in the English Channel 🌱Mallika Ballakrishnan, Digital Organiser at Migrants Organise, grassroots platform for migrant justice. 📝 Mathilda Mallinson, Middle East Eye journalist and host of Media Storm podcast, specialising in migration and displacement This panel is facilitated as part of Waterline, a powerful exhibition from the frontline crew of migrant sea rescue with photography by Nathan Akehurst. Open 12-9pm from the 11-16th August. Waterline is a photographic display of stories from the search and rescue community in the Central Mediterranean, narrating the month-long voyage of a civil sea rescue vessel where humanitarian volunteers fill a gap left by state neglect and state-sponsored violence, as they search for people in distress at sea and bring them to safety. It is accompanied by interactive exercises and artefacts that help us understand a wider story of a fractured world; the mosaic of countries and circumstances where people are moving from and to, whether it is the multinational crew or the people seeking refuge. The violence, criminalisation, and slander faced by people crossing - and increasingly people who assist them - emerges through these stories, holding a mirror to Europe’s hypocrisies and retreat from its professed values. The exhibition will launch with a series of short talks showcasing different perspectives on the story; connecting the Mediterranean to Britain’s own maritime rescue and maritime migration stories, and provoking discussions about how we relate to movement and to the sea. The fragile maritime environment also opens up conversations about the intersections between human and environmental dangers, while the sea’s liminality allows for explorations of transitions, identity and belonging. 10 Greatorex Street, London E1 5NF Part of our @pro_radix programme in @whitechapelgallery ‘s Biennial$

From widespread racist violence, to attacks on places of worship and burning down homes and businesses of people of colour, our new Prime Minister is inheriting a country which is ripping at the seams.

Successive governments have not only failed to deliver a coherent and ambitious anti-racist strategy, but have fuelled and encouraged racist hatred through cruel policies which demonise and scapegoat people of colour and migrant communities.

This time it must be different. That’s why, alongside over 100 organisations from across civil society, we’ve written to the Prime Minister to urge him to deliver a national anti-racist strategy, built with civil society and communities affected by racism and discrimination.

Tackling racism will benefit us all, from fairer institutions, to more equitable wealth distribution, creating healthy communities where everyone has the ability to prosper.
