Keep The Light On: Advice To A Younger Me

Forty years.

It’s crazy how a number can stop you in your tracks long enough to see things you’ve been looking at your whole life but never truly understood until now.

Today marks my 40th birthday and as it got closer I found myself thinking less about the things I’ve accomplished and more about everything that’s shaped me along the way.

I thought about my dad.
I thought about my mom.
I thought about the storms that have attempted to break me… and the God who never left me.

Then I found myself thinking about a lighthouse.

A lighthouse doesn’t chase ships, it just stays lit.

And the ships that need it, find it.

It doesn’t beg to be noticed. It doesn’t compete with the stars.

It simply stands where it was built, keeps its light on and faithfully guides people home.

The more I get to know me, the more I realize… that’s who I am.

I’ve never really cared much about recognition but I’ve always cared deeply about this…

I want people to make it safely to shore.

Looking back over the last forty years I realized there are 5 truths that have shaped the man I’ve become.

And these aren’t theories.

These are things that were paid for through faith, failure, family, discipline, loss, love and most importantly God’s grace.

If I could sit down with my younger self for one conversation…

This is where I’d begin.

Another 365 and I thank God for it 🙏🏾💫

I’m always so locked in on what’s next that I rarely stop to sit back and reflect. I need to get better at it and for whatever reason my birthday is kinda becoming that time when I actually do.

This past year, my focus has been simple:
Stack assets. Trim the liabilities.

And I’m not just talking about my pockets,
I’m talking mindset, habits, and my circle too.

Because wealth isn’t just money in the bank…
It’s time.
It’s freedom.
It’s peace of mind.
It’s the ability to move how you want, when you want.

It’s having room to breathe, space to grow,
and the ability to live life on your terms.

Money is a tool.
Time is the treasure.

So I’m building both.
Protecting both.
And investing them wisely.

Because a life that pays you back in peace is priceless.

Today officially marks my 38th chapter.

My connection with God is better than it’s ever been. My health and fitness is better than it’s ever been. My love, appreciation, and connections with my loved ones are better than it’s ever been. My finances are better than they’ve ever been. All of that, in that order.

Even so, my life and I are far from perfect; however, I’m beyond grateful for it all.

I know there’s a ton of pressure (especially on the younger generations) that right now is your prime and you have to have everything perfect and all figured out at this very moment.

That… is bullshxt and please don’t get it twisted. No one's life is perfect, and we're all a constant work in progress.

The prime of your life is determined by the compound effect of the daily decisions you make, work you put in, and above all, God’s grace.

Keep going and never forget that.

Big ups to everyone who’s already shown love and those that will in whatever way you do. More life to all, especially my fellow Cancers.

And more life means you’re blessed with more time to get it right.

Let’s get it!

“Even when they drop the casket, & you into it, it's still no end to it”.

December 1999. It’s 3 days before Christmas & our family receives one of our greatest blessings.

Cameron Alexander Barrett.

I’ve been waiting awhile to talk about this publicly struggling to find the words & the reason why something like this could happen to someone like you.

Today marks your 22nd birthday & since your passing not a day has gone by where you haven’t been on our minds & on our hearts.

Cam’s smile, presence, jokes & especially his laugh would literally brighten up your day no matter how dark it might’ve been.

In his time on this earth he showed us a lot of things.

He showed us how to be a pure & loving soul, how to be a selfless & standup individual, how to be a protector & be there for your family during their time of need.

Another thing that my nephew showed us was how to have fun & how to stay forever young.

I’ll never forget one day we were walking into the mall and I was telling him about one of my latest adventures, filled with excitement, plot twists & was hinted with just the right amount of danger just to make things interesting… & at the end of my story, he looks me right in my eyes, right before he delivers that signature laugh & says, “You cappin’ so hard right now” 😂

Now… I had no idea what this word meant & I wasn’t about to embarrass myself by asking so I did what any of you would’ve done… I went to the good ole trusty Urban Dictionary & found out that “cappin” is a cool way of saying “you’re lying” 😂

Cam… there’s so many things we miss about you.

I miss you saying “Unc… lemme get that chain” every time we would see each other because everybody knows Cam loved a gold chain 😂

Most of all… we all… simply miss you.

I’m a firm believer that true love shines through the darkest part of our lives.

Though we all may weep at the fact that you’re no longer here with us in the physical we can find comfort in knowing that your spirit can and will never die, that you will always be with us, and that you are in the best place we could all possibly ask for, in God’s care.

I love you and today we’re gonna turn up in your honor.

All things that were very foreign to me before the Spiritual Warrior Retreat but all those things made this event with @realryanblair and my @altercallmovement family an absolute life changing experience! ⁠
⁠
Everyday we prayed together, ate together, meditated together, hiked together, stretched together and pushed each other to a greater understanding of exactly who each of us are and who’s we are. ⁠
⁠
This retreat stretched me in so many ways and gave me a lot of gifts but for me the biggest gift was relief. As a leader you’re called to bear a lot of weight and deal with a lot of heavy issues not just in your business but outside in your personal life as well. ⁠
⁠
Thank you @realryanblair for equipping us with the tools on how to properly handle and overcome these things. I’m at a level of peace now that I’ve never had before and I have to thank you for it. I can’t wait for the next one!!!⁠

And oh yea… I fell in love with Cali while I was out there so I’ll be one of your neighbors soon. Only for a part of the year tho because y’all’s taxes are crazy. Maybe when I reach your level of Zen I’ll be able to deal with it full time 😂 ⁠

Today is officially my birthday and I’ve learned a lot over these last 35 years but one thing has become abundantly clear. I have to stop treating life like it’s always gonna be there because one day… it won’t. ⁠⁠⁠

Life is now and until that day comes best believe I’m making the rest of whatever I’m blessed to have on this earth unforgettable. The love has been tremendously felt over the last few days leading up to now and I really just wanna thank y’all from the bottom of my heart for making this birthday a very memorable one for me.⁠⁠⁠

Have y’all ever driven past a new building being constructed & for so long it looks like nothing is going on at all? It’s like literally for an eternity you’ve been driving by & it feels like they’ve been working on the same thing over & over & over again for months on end to the point where you’re like is this building ever gonna be finished??? ⁠
⁠
Then one day you’re driving by & you start to see the framing going up & the building finally begins to take shape. Then what feels like in a blink of an eye the entire building is up, done, people are moving in & you can’t believe how fast they completed everything!⁠

That’s because for so long the foundation was being laid. ⁠
⁠
The foundation is the part that nobody sees. ⁠
⁠
The foundation is the part that most people don’t care about. ⁠
⁠
The foundation is the part that takes the longest to construct, to get right & also takes the longest because it has to settle in. ⁠
⁠
It’s the part that nobody ever talks about, it’s not sexy, & often times it’s overlooked but let me tell you a few things that a foundation does. ⁠

September 2016. I’m just getting done cutting my dads yard & my phone rings. It’s @davidimonitie so immediately I pick up. He shares with me that in a couple days he’ll be resigning from the company we’re involved with together & why he’s decided to do so. There’s no panic on my end of the call & there’s even less on his. Still, the fact remains that he’s the main reason why I joined this company... & now he’s leaving?! Truthfully, the writing had been on the wall for all of us for awhile at that point. He was simply the one who had the balls to make the decision that we all had been running from.

At the time he’s not 100% sure what the next move is but he’s absolutely certain that we can’t stay here. Little did I know that his decision to leave would be the catalyst to so many lives around the world being transformed as a result. Mine included. In a world where people wanna lecture you & frame it like they want the best for you David has always separated himself from the pack for a lot of reasons but here’s some huge ones for me:

1. His heart is in the right place which leads to him always ALWAYS want the very best for you & he delivers on helping you achieve it day in & day out.

2. I know for a fact that the relationship you share with him is not about what you do with each other, it’s who you are to each other. In other words, he’s not a “commission buddy”. You know the type of person who’s your “friend” as long as the company name on the check is the same but the moment that changes they switch up? Nah… He’s a true friend regardless if you’re apart of the same company or not.

3. All of this leads me to my last point. You can TRUST him. The longer I’ve been in a position of leadership the more & more clearer it’s become that trust is the foundation for everything. If you don’t have that with whoever you’re building with then there’s already an expiration date on it.
