POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
In this episode, we sit down with Michael Breckler, CEO of Betts Shoes, to deconstruct the reality of turning around a retail empire and pulling himself back from the brink of personal collapse.

Michael inherited a 133-year-old, 5th-generation family business staring down $12 million in debt. He had to make ruthless decisions to keep the company alive. He unpacks his exact turnaround blueprint: shrinking his store network, slashing his product line in half, and investing heavily in a total rebrand at a time when cash was incredibly tight.

Beyond the boardroom, Michael opens up about the immense pressure of his family‘s legacy. He shares his personal journey of crumbling under the weight of expectations and how he used extreme accountability, cold therapy, and an unconventional ”meditation“ technique to rebuild his mind and take total control of his life.

If you are a founder navigating a business crisis, struggling with ”work-life balance,“ or looking to transform an obsessive personality into a superpower, this episode is your ultimate survival guide. taken in North Sydney, New South Wales by @mikebreckler

Betts turns 133 years old this year. Founded in 1892, by my great great grandmother Fanny Breckler, Betts is full of such a rich history spanning over so many generations. Once upon a time we had the largest shoe store in the southern hemisphere, and were proudly known as Australia’s favorite family shoe store.

Stepping up as the newest CEO at the helm of my generational family business carries so much weight. I started working in the business when I was 13, as a sales assistant in our Betts Karrinyup store. I’ve spent my life working across all parts of the business, from sales, to shoe design, brand management to e-commerce and everything in between, learning so much along the way.

I’m on a mission to take Betts to a whole new level. There’s some exciting changes around the corner. Come along for the ride. by @mikebreckler

If a business owner cannot step into any role and understand how it works, they are not really leading, they are guessing.
Real leadership comes from knowing every number, every system, and every department at its core.

Because the quality of decisions is only as strong as the depth of understanding behind them.

Competing on price feels smart. Until it quietly destroys the business.

When everyone can undercut, there is no advantage left. It becomes a race to the bottom where margins disappear and survival gets harder.

Real leverage comes from owning the product, controlling the margins, and building something competitors cannot copy. Price stops being the weapon and becomes secondary.

I don’t even know where to begin. My heart is completely broken. You were my everyday sidekick, we did absolutely everything together as a family. Our whole life revolved around you, caring for you through every accident and every seizure, doing everything we could to keep you safe and with us.

You had the world biggest asshole title and the biggest presence. Always up to mischief, always watching, always plotting your next move for food. You somehow had a secret talent for annoying absolutely everyone and yet we wouldn’t have changed a single second of it. That was you. Loud, loving, stubborn, hilarious… ours.

I still can’t believe you’re no longer here. Life will never be the same without you. You have left the biggest hole in my heart one that could only ever be filled by you. by @mikebreckler

If you want to achieve something exceptional, then by definition you must be the exception. That means doing things most wouldn’t. Sacrificing things others won’t.
Unlock the beast within that makes you fanatically obsessed with your goal, so much so that it would be unreasonable for you to fail. What are you waiting for? Make 2026 your year. by @mikebreckler
