As a companion to the exhibition Michael Cassidy - Vulnerability, we welcome Lemuel Watson for a talk about personhood.

Wednesday November 20, 6 PM
1221 Lincoln Street, Columbia

Lemuel W. Watson is a writer, scholar, and beacon of thought whose work traverses the landscapes of literature, spirituality, and community empowerment. As a writer, his words pulse with the echoes of forthright honesty, lyrical prose, and indomitable rhythm, weaving together narratives that speak to the depths of the human experience. In academia, Watson’s scholarship challenges the boundaries of conventional thought, infusing new perspectives into discussions on resilience, spirituality, and hope. A devoted philanthropist, he channels his efforts into nurturing spaces where creativity and social justice intersect, guiding others toward light with compassion and wisdom. Watson’s contributions, whether through his writings, teachings, or advocacy, resonate as a call to reflection and action—a testament to the power of words and ideas to transform hearts and communities.

Join Mike Brown Contemporary for a conversation with solo exhibiting artist Cedric Umoja.

Thursday May 2, 7 PM

Umoja will discuss his process, practice and the body of work in is solo exhibition The Field, currently on view at MBC thru May 12.
He'll be joined by special guest
Jennifer Bartell Boykin, Columbia's Poet Laureate Bartell Boykin will share new poems inspired by Umoja's exhibition.

...any cultivated ground or pasture, an agricultural metaphor for the church, an open land, area free of woods and buildings. An area of land marked by the presence of particular objects or features. A region of space for which each point is associated with a specific physical quantity. Properties of matter that are formed at scales below that of human perception, and thus appear continuous at human scales, such as temperature or soil moisture. Shadow economies that support grind and hustle culture, both legal and illicit.

Umoja’s work imagines the field as a liminal space. The uncertain transition between enslavement and freedom. Between forced labor camp and free Black space. Where Black people have been and where Black people are going physically, emotionally, or metaphorically. Between providing for an oppressor and providing for themselves. It’s an exploration of past, current and future projects of labor, resistance, and land occupation. This exhibition includes three channel video projections, sculpture, large mixed media paintings on canvas, small mixed media works on paper, sculpture and installation. Heavily influenced by ancient and contemporary mark making, these vibrant works include collage assemblage, and performance replete with ritual and a nod to vernacular houses, work spaces, places of worship and the jeweled styling of matriarchs and hard old men.

“Healing Scars and Bruises”
Community Exhibition by the Women’s Well-Being Initiative at the University of South
Carolina and Mike Brown Contemporary Art Gallery

The University of South Carolina’s Women’s Well-Being Initiative (WWBI) is collaborating with
Mike Brown Contemporary, directed by Michaela Pilar Brown, to exhibit artwork by adolescent girls in the Lexington County Juvenile Arbitration Program and sexual assault
survivors on USC’s campus.
WWBI was established by the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies at USC in 2001.
WWBI is committed to creating sustainable university-community partnerships that promote
the well-being of women and girls in the Midlands and enhance the recognition of the full
diversity of women's experiences across race, class, age, ability, and other dimensions of difference.

Artwork by the first-time, non-violent female offenders who complete restorative sanctions as
an alternative to incarceration, includes video films, poetry, multi-media collages, paintings,
and sculptures. In their work, girls reflect on the critical issues and traumas in their lives
including body image, relationship violence, gender and racial biases, and mental health.

Artwork by sexual assault survivors who are students on USC’s campus, includes innerlandscape, neurographic art, and body maps. Embodied and trauma-informed in nature, all pieces were created to enhance the body-mind connection of survivors who might not have
fully inhabited their body. Their allusive yet realist works invite viewers to reflect on what it
means to be survivors of trauma.
All artwork is displayed anonymously.

An Opening Reception will be held at Mike Brown Contemporary on Thursday, March 14, 6:30-
8:00 p.m.

A Closing Panel discussion, How Can Arts Foster Community Healing, Solidarity, and Social
Change? will be held at Mike Brown Contemporary on Saturday, March 23, 1:00-3:00 p.m. by @mikebrowncontemporary

Quitman Marshall, author of Swampitude, sits in conversation with longtime friend journalist Eileen Waddell.

Saturday, February 17, 2pm
1221 Lincoln Street, Columba SC 29201

Swampitude: Escapes with the Congaree explores and meditates upon the social, literary, historical, personal, ecological, psychological, and political meanings of a swamp: swamps in general, and a particular swamp, the Congaree in the center of South Carolina, which has been designated a United Nations Biosphere Reserve and is now Congaree National Park.
A magical place of escape and fecundity, the Congaree Swamp, emblematic of all such often forbidding terrains, is the largest old-growth river bottom forest in the United States. It is in the American South and has filtered much of that region’s history. The Congaree is also lucky to have gathered an environmental movement, escaped the fate of most similar wetlands, and to continue to flood, drain, and provide refuge for all creatures in need of it. This book celebrates the survival, the stories, and the continuance of such places. by @mikebrowncontemporary
