#photodump Over last three weeks, I’ve traveled from my hometown to Omaha and Columbia, SC with Birmingham, AL and Atlanta inbetween. I was nominated for Artist of the Year in the Northeast Louisiana region but didn’t win. Felt good to be celebrated and for member of our group, BCCNL, to win was a win. Stopped in Birmingham, @bhammuseum to checkout their collection, then on to Atlanta to check out Amy Sherald at the High Museum. Very much needed. Dope show. Last, I arrived at 701 CCA on July 1st for a month long residency. In one week, I’ve been all over Columbia, SC and experienced a variety of different things. The city has a very interesting story. Looking forward to learning more. If you’re in the area, stop by. My studio hours are Tuesday- Thursday, 1-5pm or by appointment. #sodacitysc #cheers

I went to Mike Mugs, I think last year, at Mike Brown Contemporary Art Gallery and had an amazing conversation with local artists and supporters of the arts. I recall discussing the work I do in the community, and Michaela Brown asked me, “Who is helping you?” I had never really thought about that before. I’ve sat with that question ever since and started taking a look at what I can do for myself as an artist, how I can reach out to people in the arts community to share their insights, and get feedback on my work.

I have learned and often have to remind myself that it is okay to set boundaries. To walk away from opportunities or people in order to prioritize my needs. You can pour so much into other people that you forget to take care of yourself.

School of Visual Art and Design at the University of South Carolina has provided me with the opportunity to invest in myself as an artist, as well as the space to make new work and engage with others about my creative process. It’s allowed me to develop my work conceptually, and it has taught me how to speak out loud to a group about my thoughts and opinions and how they influence my work. As I’m navigating this journey through grad school and coming to the end of my first year, I’m reassessing what’s next.

I’m reminding myself that my sole purpose isn’t helping everyone else. I can be an active artist in this community and in other places my work will take me.

I look forward to having the community visit me in my studio this summer and sharing what I am working on and working through.

I realize posting on a Saturday is not advised. Everybody's out and about, as they should be! But I find the advice to be conflicting, and anyway, posting your work is taking a chance no matter what day it is. This is a piece I finished several days ago. Inspired by the woman's peaceful image, I wanted her surroundings to evoke the feeling that she is spending time in her own special meditative place.
