The beauty of an old city like New York is finding history in unexpected places.

When Southdale opened in a suburb of Minneapolis in the 1950s, it was the first indoor, climate-controlled mall in the country. Its public spaces featured gardens, cafés, and public art. The mall’s architect, Victor Gruen, commissioned artist Harry Bertoia, whose “Golden Trees” still stand in the mall today.

Imagine my surprise when I walked into a Uniqlo in NYC and encountered an unmistakable Bertoia piece. This beast is 70 feet wide, 16 feet tall, weighing 5 tons, and was originally commissioned by architect Gordon Bunshaft for the Manufacturers Hanover Trust building. When the building sold in 2010, the piece was removed, but a court ruling mandated its return.

I was delighted to encounter this amazing work by complete chance.

There was something otherworldly about hearing the gentle squeak of a record amplified into a cascading force, dominating every note in the audible spectrum, as if each note was carefully poured into the room by the artists themselves.

Currently on exhibition at Cooper Hewett is the “Art of Noise,” which features a large-scale handmade audio system. I sat in this room for probably 40 minutes, just listening. Totally enveloped by the sound.

They also had lots of neat old radios and home audio systems on display. And a couple iPods. Ancient artifacts of a forgotten time. taken in Cooper Hewitt by @mikehasinternet

@mikehasinternet sent us this photo of a building on Central Avenue. With the stucco removed, ghost signs are showing in all their glory! Plus: extra points to anyone who remembers what was in this building. taken in Minneapolis, Minnesota by @mikehasinternet
