Come hear the story of community saving the John Cook House!

This Monday, we’re joining @RethosPlaces for Drinking in History: Saving the John Cook House — sharing the wild journey from fighting demolition to buying the house, beginning restoration, and, most importantly, building community around this 1889 Minneapolis landmark.

Come hear our conversation with Amy Thomas (Rethos Director of Real Estate and a member of the Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission!) and some of the community members at the heart of this effort: Seth, Elizabeth, Michael, Elena, and Louise, co-leaders, organizers, and designers helping us imagine what comes next.

They’re just a few of the MANY people who have stepped forward with their time, skills, creativity, and enthusiasm to make this possible.

It’s true. The confluence of our 1,000th rider of the year and our 200th Coffee (Outside) of all time has occurred at the same time. And this is the crew that made it happen.

We focus a lot on the community outside of the bike shop. But let me brag about the people inside the shop for a minute. This is the first time Recovery Bike Shop has sold 1,000 bikes on its own. This is the first time a Reco crew has built 1,000 bikes in 12 months.

They did it by working together. These people look out for each other. They pick up the slack when someone is sick. They come up front to help each other when it’s busy. They ask questions and give answers without judgement. They quality check each other’s bikes and make each other smarter along the way.

This crew is made of some of the best people I know.

In 21 years I’ve never been more proud of what we do. I’ve never enjoyed this job more. I’ve never liked being at the shop as much as I do now. This place, this old bike shop, these people, they set a good example. They make this a healthy place to be.

Thank you to everyone that supported us this year. Thank you to everyone that rides in Minneapolis.

In honor of this milestone, we will be celebrating Coffee (Outside) at Recovery Bike Shop Sunday at 10am.

If you get here by 9am, you can join our weekly yoga class (free). And at around 11am we’ll bike around the neighborhood after Coffee (Outside). Looking forward to seeing you!

We’re activating our neighborhood streets every time we walk or roll. That’s the idea behind the Sunday Community Rides.

People make our streets feel safer and more comfortable, which encourages more people to be out and about creating more activation, bringing more people out and on and on.

It’s a virtuous cycle! (Pun intended)

Join us Sundays at 11am after Coffee (Outside). Follow us for a new location every week (somewhere in NE Mpls).

These are slow, meandering rides. Last week we found a sculpture map and rode all over Northeast talking about art. It was lovely!

Everyone welcome to ride at 11am. Everyone welcome at Coffee (Outside) at 10am. For that matter, everyone is welcome at yoga before Coffee at 9am (at the bike shop)

Thank you for an epic parade experience yesterday and for all of the support for the John Cook House. What an incredible showing at the NE Parade. Thank you to the 50+ riders that joined Recovery Bike Shop and came to the John Cook House to celebrate with us. We actually received some real donations from the public.

Thank you, Mandy, for tabling at the house, for being an advocate for the John Cook House, and for being a neighbor that cares so much for this block and for this community. This truly would not be the same project without you.

UPDATES: We are still working to get all of the bank requirements completed. We are also working through the city of Minneapolis’ checklist, which is especially challenging on a condemned property. But progress is happening.

Fun fact: the Eiffel Tower was built for the World’s Fair in 1889, the same year the John Cook House was built!

As always, it helps a lot when people share the story of the John Cook House. Thank you!

Thank you thank you thank you to everyone that came out to ride with us in the Northeast Parade last night. What an honor to share that space with you. We are so grateful for all of the love and support that came our way during the parade (and always). I love this town with all my heart. ♥️

I just can’t explain how meaningful it is hearing from people about the John Cook House. The love and support that is being directed at us is unbelievable. It is incredibly humbling. Thank you. This community meets and exceeds our expectations at every turn.

That is why we are here. That is why we are doing this. When it was time for @RecoveryBikeShop to move out of the Eastside Co-op, almost 300 of you chipped in to buy “the worst” property on the block. It was the thing that was holding the neighborhood back. We split it in half and the two buildings became Fair State and Aki’s and Recovery Bike Shop.

This is what we do. We are Northeast. We are following your example.

After most of a year, we have a deal to acquire the John Cook House! Of course this means the sprint just became a marathon and our little group now needs help more than ever.

But the John Cook House has a chance again. That’s because of an incredible (incredible) coalition of friends, neighbors, and community members in a growing group that has stepped forward to stand up for our history, for our city, and for our people. We are humbled, grateful, and proud. 🥹

Despite months of work, we have really only just finished the first step: our group and the owner have agreed on a purchase price. We will own the house at the end of June after inspection, more due diligence, and some serious fundraising, and only if all of it goes according to plan.
