Sunrise in City Park, Denver, Colorado this morning

Thanks to some unseasonably warm weather below the Front Range recently, the sunrises and sunsets in Denver and neighboring communities have been off the charts. While the lack of snow and cold is concerning, these colorful displays have been the most vibrant and consistent in recent memory, like a gentle reminder saying, even in the most troubling times there’s always a silver (or pink) lining.

The photographer vs. the photos

There are quite a few new friends following this humble photo account, so I figured I should reintroduce myself…

I’m Mike, just a regular guy from the Cleveland area trying to make my photography dream come true. I moved to Denver 10 years ago, aspiring to capture grand landscapes and hidden gems during my outdoor adventures, and taking my passion to the next level.

I work in retail management by day and practice my photography any moment I can. When I’m not taking photos, I love exploring Colorado’s backcountry, small towns, ghostly haunts, alpine zones and Great Plains by biking, hiking, trail running, snowshoeing and mountaineering. When I’m not outside, I’m usually reading about political science or fantasy fiction, lifting heavy things at the gym, or cooking overly elaborate recipes.

About a year ago, I started @denverphotowalks with my wonderful fiancée @_rye_uh_. We try to encourage inclusivity and networking for Denver-area creatives with seasonal photo walks and hang outs around the Front Range communities.

Coming from a family of photographers, my grandpa gifted me my first DSLR, a Canon Rebel T5, after my college graduation. A few years ago, I became disenchanted with this hobby as I struggled to turn it into a profession.

Around this time, my grandpa gifted me his old Nikon N80, my first 35mm film camera, sparking a love for film photography that has grown into a quiet obsession. This is a collection of some of my favorite film and digital images I’ve made in that time.

I’m currently open for booking portrait shoots, weddings, events and brand work, so if you’d like to work together or have a lead on a new project or event, please hit me up! ✌🏻

Road Tripping through the American Southwest - Part 🎱

When Riah and I woke up on the top of Mt. Lemmon, over 6,000 feet above Tucson, memories of the drive up came rushing back.

We left @saguaronationalpark after sunset with little idea where we would sleep that night. I remembered a ranger from Grand Canyon recommending Mt. Lemmon as a viable option for car camping. When we finally found a campground, we were surprised to find we were completely alone. While this area is a highly popular escape from the summer heat, springtime sees very few visitors.

As we cruised back down to the desert floor, we agreed that we had time for only a couple stops on our second-last day of the trip. We decided to check out Tombstone - a well-known frontier town, famous for the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and its mining roots. It has since been enshrined in pop culture as a vision of the Old West with movies and songs like Johnny Cash’s ‘Ballad of Boot Hill.’ Though the town is a tourist trap with characters dressed in period clothing, ‘Tombstone’ playing on every bar tv, and reenacted shootouts every few hours, it was still fun to walk the same dirt roads as Doc Holliday and the Earp brothers.

After leaving Tombstone, we realized we had just enough time to make it to @whitesandsnps. We beelined it to the park, outside Alomogordo, New Mexico, dodging Haboobs and tumbleweeds and even experiencing our first border checkpoint.

We made it White Sands with just minutes to spare before sunset. I was in complete panic mode, blindly grabbing cameras and lenses. In my rush, I forgot my tripod and decided I had no time to turn back. Despite not being fully prepared, I made my favorite images of entire trip this evening. The sky opened up with light rays, dramatic clouds and pink tones. I frantically started firing in all directions, not knowing if I came away with anything. When the sun finally sank behind the Organ Mountains, I couldn’t even remember what just happened. Adrenaline had completely taken over.

Road Tripping through the American Southwest — Part ✌🏻🤚🏻

Shortly after we started dating, my fiancée and I agreed that instead of expensive, elaborate gifts for each other’s birthdays, we would focus on memorable trips and experiences. Sometime last year, @_rye_uh_ mentioned how much she would like to visit @saguaronationalpark, especially during the cactus bloom.

For her birthday in April, we planned a roadtrip through some parts of the Southwest we had never been before, with our primary destination set as Tucson, Arizona.

Saguaro National Park surrounds Tucson with over 90,000 acres of Sonoran wilderness. It is split into two sections: the Tucson Mountain District on the west side and the Rincon Mountain District on the east. The park is a significant aspect of Tucson culture, flanking the city on both sides and serving as many residents’ backyard.

On the seventh day of our trip, we traded the bright neon lights of Tucson’s Miracle Mile for the quiet stillness of the desert. As we explored the west side that morning, a thick layer of cloud seemed to insulate the area, amplifying the flutter of woodpeckers, the buzzing of insects, the wind rustling through the ocotillo.

The saguaro cacti stood defiant and proud, as if to say, “Yes, life is hard. And despite it all, I persist.” The light was less than ideal for photography, but that did not deter us. We took of photos of everything, entranced by the endless details, the otherworldly landscape, and the richness of life.

The Gila woodpeckers were out in abundance, sipping the nectar from the cactus blooms and calming their frantic (and famished) babies. We kept our eyes peeled for bobcats and owls, hoping to see one curled up in a saguaro arm.

Later that evening, we trekked to the more mountainous east side, where the clouds parted and the light made the cacti glow with viridescence. The sun sank quickly, alerting the woodpeckers to return to their noisy nests.

When the sun dipped below the horizon, I learned that the colors in vintage Arizona advertisements are the real deal. The sky exploded with the most vibrant reds and oranges I’ve ever seen.
