Road Tripping through the American Southwest - Part 5

In the months leading up to our Southwest roadtrip, I was voraciously watching outdoor adventure YouTube - channels devoted to fishing, hiking, canoeing and, especially, bikepacking. One creator in particular - @gregmccahon - inspired me to check out a popular yet seldom heard of escarpment known as the Mogollon Rim.

Before we reached the rim, Riah and I explored some of the Coconino wilderness surrounding Sedona. The amount of options in the area is, frankly, fairly overwhelming, so we decided on one of the popular hikes near our camp: the infamous Subway Cave (or Vanity Cave as some of the locals call it).

Of course, once we heard we could take a short detour to a vortex, we knew we picked the right trail. Though 6 miles and 800 feet of elevation gain sound like relatively easy statistics, the Sedona sun completely cooked us. After hiking for hours in the Sonoran Desert, escaping to the cool mountain air of the Mogollon Rim was exactly what we needed.

Leaving camp on Loy Butte Road

Hiking the Boynton Pass Trail

Flowering ocotillo

Climbing up to the Boynton Pass Vortex

I learned, on this hike, that agave present these incredible, giant flowers at the end of their 10-to-30-year life cycle only, known as a “death bloom”

Sedona is surrounded by impressive buttes and peaks, truly a desert oasis

Hiking out

One last look at the valley

In awe of these giants

Desert sun

Our first view from the Rim

Isolated showers over the Rim

The evening light was nothing short of magical

Looking out toward Payson, AZ

The clouds stuck around for sunset

My favorite campsite of the entire trip, one of the best of my life. A place I often go to in my mind. 🥹

It may be the first day of September, but summer ain’t over yet! We hope you’ll hang out and hike with us in Morrison on Saturday, September 12th!

We know it’s been a while, and yes, we are still an active group! 😅 Summer always seems to slip through our fingers, and this one was definitely busier than most. We can’t wait to catch up with our photog friends, new and old, during a relaxing hike in the clean mountain air.

We’ll meet at the ***WEST*** Mount Falcon Park Trailhead at 4p before hiking about 1.2 miles to the Walker Mansion - an abandoned and dilapidated chalet built on the mountaintop in 1909. We’ll take in the sights, look for interesting birds, explore the ruins and enjoy each other’s company before completing the loop trail with another mile hike out.

Parking is limited, so car pooling is advised. After the hike, we’ll hang at Red Rocks Beer Garden for more good times and maybe even a surprise. Over the next week and a half, we’ll be posting more details, so save this post and look out for more to come. Any questions, feel free to DM us.

It’s going to be a great time, and we hope you can join. Who knows? With our past luck with avian sightings, you might even see a falcon!*

*Falcons are not guaranteed

From the desert to the alpine…

Shortly after exploring @canyonlandsnps, @archesnps, and @deadhorsepoint my sister and I checked another national park off the list — completing the renowned Emerald Lake route to the base of Halley Peak in @rockynps. It was the best way to complete this memorable trip in the spring of 2016 and make me feel fully connected to my new home state.

It’s hard to believe this was 10 years ago and even harder to comprehend I’ve lived in Denver for over a decade.

National Park trips + indie stays (bye, chain hotels) are having a moment…

Y’all still saying “we should plan something” in the group chat? Time to escalate.

Think:
Great Sand Dunes.
Sandboarding.
Hot springs.
Dark sky stars going crazy.

National Park: @greatsanddunesnps
Basecamp: @mellowmoonlodge

Why?
Personality > predictable.
Craft > continental.
Vibes > vanilla.

2026 is not the year for mid.

Save this.
Send it.
See you out here.
