Part 1/4 of being in Dialogue with @tundeoduga for Act 1 of my recent solo show BOYZ II BEASTS @centralserverworks. Josh and I had an hour conversation about the roots of my purpose for why and how I make the art that I do. This 4 part dialogue is a comprehensive entry point into my mind and thinking that influence my art rituals and creative ethos especially as it relates to the recent BOYZ II BEASTS body of work. I believe in mostly letting the art speak for itself, but Josh and I felt very strongly that there should be a moment that exists where we speak to the moment of creating the exhibition and the work to share, educate, contribute, and most importantly collaborate with our voices and perspective.Money Talks, Bullshit Walks.Shot and Directed by: @lowkey_hope #mikereesé by @mikereesay

Central Server Works is excited to announce the gallery's 10th solo exhibition with artist Mike Reesé, titled "Boyz II Beasts Act 1: No Soul Left Behind," which will be on display from September 9 to November 3, 2023, at Central Server Works DTLA. This series, Innermission Intermission emerged in the spaces between developing new works.They are sketches, fragments, and traces of experimentation. As I made them, they slowly began to assemble into a collage of dialogue—a conversation I didn’t know I was having.They gathered during my intermission.An intermission gives the audience a pause from the story—a chance to gather, reflect, and chatter among themselves.The audience experiences the intermission. The performer experiences the inner mission.The conversation that shapes the work is rarely the one outside the stage. In studio - working on my permanent installation at Manual Arts. Established in 1910, it is the third-oldest high school in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). It happens to be about a 3-5 minute drive from our first @dreamhausla warehouse. It also is where a couple of my favorite artists; Philip Guston and Jackson Pollock attended high school in the late 20’s.More than a year removed from this project, I can recall it leaving me in complete exhaustion,: the labor , scale , timeline , conflict of traveling on tour. I overextended myself for the attempt to potentially give lifetimes of adolescents a glimmer into their boundless imagination. Guess I’m a sucker for the kids.. …. by @mikereesay

“There is another type of competitiveness that might be seen as an infinite gain: a story that can continue to unfold over the course of an artist’s life. This is the competition with the self.Think of self-competition as a quest for evolution. The object is not to beat our other work. It’s to move things forward and create a sense of progression.”These masks, as I refer to them, come from my investigation of the performative as ritual—a ritual that stages the theater of confidence, joy, ease, and trust, while concealing everything that lies beneath. I often wonder what intentions, histories, and secrets live behind the smiles and distortions of a persona.I’ve participated in that masquerade every day.Maybe that‘s why I keep making these faces.Perhaps, in the solitude of self-love, I find the courage to exist beyond performance. by @mikereesay

Before any painting, I write to align myself with what the work will be ,what the material will do , & how I want to connect with people.The gathering of my joy and imagination,laughter and smiles are not frozen figments— they are an everlasting pulse.The play of emotions…are they the foundation of ever-changing faces of happinessthat mask my past yearning?Or are they the jail of past bliss,waiting for their day of freedom?- Cry with Me, Smile for Me ( No inner-child left behind ), 2026Thank you to my brother @theartofalbaseer for including me in his curation of “The Gathering” in his hometown Philadelphia alongside a cast of brilliant artists. Philly is an electrifying city with passionate people that are keen on the offering of your heart and effort.
