New season. New headshot. A lot to be grateful for.

This past chapter has been about building and going deeper, both personally and professionally. I’ve been growing in my faith, which has brought more clarity, discipline, and gratitude into how I show up each day.

On the work side, I’ve continued to go all in on @theveteranfund. What started as an idea has become my life’s work and the clearest expression of what I’m here to build, alongside my best friends who are also my business partners.

Along the way, I’ve built a personal portfolio of 120+ companies and have the privilege of backing exceptional founders building in critical technologies, all with a shared goal of advancing America.

Outside of work, I’ve leaned into adventure more than ever. I recently traveled to my 66th country and to Antarctica, my seventh continent, and rocked a handstand at my seventh and final man-made wonder of the world. Always reminded how much there is to experience in this beautiful world, and how important it is to be present through life.

Another highlight was bringing a group to Mexico through @greatnessventures to build more homes for deserving families, something I’ve done every year for the past 14 years on my birthday. One of the most meaningful traditions in my life.

Moving to Austin has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It feels more like home than anywhere else in this season of life.

On a personal note, I recently passed two years without alcohol. It’s brought a level of clarity and consistency I didn’t expect. Just as meaningful has been time with family and deepening friendships that feel like family.

For those who don’t know me: I’m the Co-Founder and General Partner of The Veteran Fund, investing in high-growth startups led by elite military veterans. I’m a Marine Corps veteran and former founder. I started the Veteran and Military Family program at the world's largest startup accelerator, mentor founders, and guest lecture at Stanford University.

At the core: do great things, and back builders who do the same.

I’ll be sharing more from both the work and the adventures ahead.

Grateful for the journey so far, and for you being part of it ⚡ taken in Austin, Texas by @mikesherbakov

On Friday morning, we arrived in Mexico and the Santoyo family's home was a dirt floor, pallets/plywood for walls, and a ripped tarp for a roof.

48 hours later, Adelina, Ale, Rafael, and Ximena walked through the front door of their beautiful new two bedroom home for the first time.

11 years of leading these projects on a quarterly cadence, I continue to be inspired by the impact we can make in such a short time.

Thank you to everyone who joined us to make this house build possible, and to the 2k+ individuals that have supported these @greatnessventures projects over the years.

If you're interested in supporting the family, we could use your help in getting them beds, a stove, and water tank: www.gofundme.com/f/julybuild

If you're interested in joining us for a house build weekend, we have a few spots open for January 2024: www.GreatnessVentures.com/january

@mikesherbakov has been leading trips to Mexico to build homes for deserving families for almost 15 years. That's five years before he sold his company and wrote his first angel check.

His lesson? You don't need a certain number in your bank account to make the difference you want to make. It's never too early to start.

Hear more from Mike, Co-Founder & General Partner, The Veteran Fund, at Impact Makers Party this Thursday, Oct 8, at The Chateau on Lake Austin.

There is a reason high-net-worth founders keep making the same move.

When you are dealing with large capital and liquidity events, staying in the wrong state is one of the most expensive decisions you can make.

Some trips leave you with photos. Others leave you with a different perspective. 🏝️🏄‍♂️💡

This week on Necker Island was full of unforgettable moments: a game of chess with Richard Branson, my first attempt at a kiteboarding back roll, plenty of pickleball and padel, incredible wildlife, and the opportunity to spend time with people building remarkable companies, investing in the future, and thinking deeply about the world we’re leaving behind - including a memorable discussion with Kelsey Grammer about preserving our republic for the next 250 years.

What I’ll remember most isn’t any single activity. It’s the reminder that curiosity, generosity, optimism, and a willingness to keep learning seem to be common traits among exceptional people.

And that the richest life isn’t measured only by what we build, but also by the adventures we pursue, the friendships we cultivate, and the memories we create along the way.

Grateful for the perspective, the friendships, and the inspiration to keep building.

Business mogul @mikesherbakov wrote his first check to a second-time founder who had already sold a company for hundreds of millions. Seemed like a safe bet.

A few months later, the guy was posting from Bali, then Tulum, then Costa Rica. A good story is not the same as a good business model.

Most people say the right things. Very few actually do them.

@mikesherbakov watched his parents arrive in America with nothing and never once saw them say something they did not follow through on. No sleeping in. No excuses. Just action, every single day.

He took that same standard into business. First angel investment in 2015. Into Bitcoin at $800. Built his entire personal track record before he ever touched outside capital. Now he manages 130 companies doing billions.

The world does not have a knowledge problem. It has an action problem.

Business mogul @mikesherbakov has had 100x returns, and the formula is simple. Team, product, market. But at the early stage, when the product is still rough, and the customers are few, it comes down to one thing.

Find a founder who will not quit, no matter what. That is the only bet worth making.

He came to America at 5, sleeping in a dresser drawer. Joined the Marines at 18 without telling his parents. Now manages 130 companies doing billions.

Comment “Mike” and I’ll DM you the full episode.

@mikesherbakov’s family arrived with nothing. His siblings went to Stanford, Berkeley, Palantir, and OpenAI. Mike joined the Marines the day 9/11 hit him personally, got meritorious promotions, walked out five years later, and never looked for a ceiling again.

He made his first angel investment in 2015, got into Bitcoin at $800, and built a track record that eventually became the Veteran Fund, now backing 130 companies across critical technology sectors.

In this conversation, Mike breaks down:
-What the Marines taught him about how far you can actually push past done
-How he built his own portfolio before ever touching outside capital
-The first check he wrote, what went wrong, and what it cost him
-Why veteran founders have a structural edge most people overlook
-The three-word operating principle he lives his entire life by

This episode is not about investing. It is about what someone with nothing to their name builds when they decide there is no ceiling.
