“An Estrangement” Sometimes there is a beauty in pure colour and form that can be a still point. It can be an aid to contemplation and almost meditative. I find some paintings have that quality, in the same way that Debussy’s short pieces, or Hepworth’s large forms do. “Racing Coasters” Oil on canvas. 100cm x 80cm . I am returning to a favourite theme of the funfair and amusement rides, for one painting only. In this painting the intention is to place the viewer in the position of being in motion on a ride, whilst catching sight of other rides moving dynamically around them at speed. Whilst it is predominantly rooted in abstraction, there are strong elements of figuration to amplify the kinetic perspective. “Stabat Mater Dolorosa” SWIPE for details and scale. Oil, acrylic, wood ash, charcoal and pumice. 100cm x 80cm. A principally abstract painting, newly completed. I’m not Christian. I’m not religious. But I am drawn to the powerful stories, myths and narratives attached to the faith based infrastructures that underpin so many cultural communities around the globe. In this case a moment from the foundational Christian narrative, as recounted in the gospels of the New Testament. This painting represents the moment at which the living Christ breathes his last, flanked on either side by thieves, or rebels, and subject to horrific Roman punishment. The figuration is barely hinted at, implied and carved out with wood ash, burnt umber and sgrafitto. The moment where the Madonna momentarily breaks down is represented by the fractured patches of King’s Blue across the canvas. The title is drawn from the Marion Prayer, Stabat Mater Dolorosa- stands the mother weeping-and has been a constant reminder of the Passion since the 13th Century. The story for me has no less power for not being true, and is held by me in great respect, for those who believe it is. Pergolesi’s beautiful music provides a haunting backdrop and has been a direct inspiration for the composition. #abstractart painting #galleryart #mikewaldronart #calvary by @mikewaldronart

“Out Of Eden.” Oil on stretched canvas 100cm x 80cm. I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to step outside my studio space and paint in the garden this past few weeks.? Perhaps this has influenced my interpretation of this foundational story/myth. Clearly the focus of the composition is the aperture. It is unavoidable, but I also wanted to imbue it with a sense of mystery, for us to wonder what is on the other side. Like Kong Island? The foregrounded figures of Adam and Eve seem insignificantly small in comparison, with the River Pishon leading the eye into uncharted territories. I am still exploring different ways in which to balance figuration and abstraction. I have used sgrafitto to disrupt the surface of the paint and dilute some of the illusionary elements of the composition. SWIPE to see detail and scale. A new work by Mike Waldronart One of the things I enjoy most about following an artist over time is noticing when something shifts. This piece feels different to me, and here is my take on it ... Rather than immediately describing a place, event, or people, Mike seems to describe a state of seeing. The architecture which he often portrays is still there, but only just. Buildings emerge, dissolve, and reappear as your eyes move across the canvas. Nothing feels fixed. And what I find particularly interesting is the tension between movement and stillness. The energetic drips and expressive brushwork create a sense of instability, yet the quiet horizon offers a place for the eye to rest. It almost acts as a breath within the composition. The tension is palpable ... The colour is rather intriguing. Soft blues and warm neutrals are interrupted by assertive loud reds that seem to punctuate the painting rather than dominate it. They introduce rhythm and energy without overwhelming the whole. For me, this isn't a painting that gives itself away in the first few seconds. It asks you to stay with it. To notice. To let your perception shift, if you are willing to stay ... That, perhaps, is one of the qualities I value most in art. I'd be interested to hear whether others see this as a new direction or simply another chapter in Mike's evolving visual language. @mikewaldronart by @mikewaldronart
