Here it is; the new video for my song "On A Blue Day" created by film and animation treasure @rubyingleheartstudio. We had a lovely time working together on this between Pendennis point and @cornishbank in Falmouth. Many thanks to the Cornish Bank for letting us film there and to all of our dear friends who featured as spirits in the video!

Of course, my deepest gratitude to @michaelpaulmetcalfe (drums) and @awenmyfs (cello) who are so beautifully accompanying me on this recording, to @biffroxby @wraudio who was the recordist for the sessions and took great care of me and my noise, to @samproctormusic @lismore_mastering for working his mastering magic and of course @hollyharman_violin for her support, faith, friendship and guidance as a co-producer.

Dear your internet Lordship / Ladyboat,
As you insist that the flourishing of my noise shall be dependent upon it being tethered to moving pictures, please find a considered dose of my characteristic nonsense attached.

My secondary school maths teacher, Mrs B, once shouted at me from across the room "Michael Kenney, stop playing silly beggars with a stick and a piece of paper".
As you can see, not much has changed except for the introduction of the Tefflemeripians. Back then, I replied "It's not silly beggars, it's micro-cricket" which didn't help; I was sent out to the naughty room - B13. It's a good job I didn't take her literally and walk to Moseley in Birmingham. B13 didn't really feel like a punishment; there was a full tin of ginger nut biscuits in that room.

Anyway, I originally intended to work on a more colourful, part-animated video for this song but I've had to improvise thanks to being stalled by my accident. I still intend to bring that video into existence though so please consider this one a placeholder for now!

This song, Tiny Little Light, is the title-track of my forthcoming album which will be released on Penny Fiddle Records on 26th September. You can pre-order it here: https://mikeykenney.bandcamp.com/album/tiny-little-light

Good morning me dearies!
This coming week I’ll be getting stuck into this year’s brilliant @livirishfest programme and collaborating with @movemadance on two different dance events. No dancing to recorded music for you this week; it’s all live, live, live!!

First up is a Sean Nós dance workshop (Irish old style step dancing) with @mariamiamalone at the @liverpoolirishcentre on Thursday 15th. Tickets are £15 - advance booking required.

Then on Saturday 17th I’ll be taking our céilí band @saltcutters down to the beautiful @liveatstbrides to play for Movema Dance’s 17th birthday Céilí from 7pm onwards. Tickets are £20 and include an Irish stew (vegan & gluten free options available).

This céilí is also serving as a fundraiser for Movema Dance - the indispensable Dance foundation that have served our community with invaluable and inclusive access to dance & music for the past 17 years. With times being so treacherous for the arts they need our support right now. Please don’t pass this by - it’s win-win for everybody; a great night of dance, music, food and drink in a beautiful venue and for a worthy cause.

Please, please book your céilí tickets right away if you want to come; it’s absolutely crucial to facilitate the numbers for dancing and making sure that the event goes ahead.

Mikey Kenney is a fiddle player and singer whose music lives at the intersection of tradition and
individuality – rooted in both English and Irish heritage – very much the musical product of his
hometown, Liverpool - yet driven by an acutely personal artistic approach. With a style that is both
technically assured and deeply expressive, Kenney has emerged as a compelling presence in the
traditional music world, earning attention for performances that are as emotionally resonant as they
are energetically engaging.

“Mikey Kenney is a rare gem... there are few people who seem to embody traditional music in quite
the same way. He’s like a walking tune book, and his dedication to keeping the old music of his
native Lancashire alive is something to be cherished. In person, he’s much as his press images
suggest he might be. Surely born in the wrong era, there’s a wide-eyed wonder about him, and a
sense that he was left on this planet to roam and soak up as many musical traditions as he possibly
can. He’s seen a lot and he’s played a lot and his music positively drips with the wisdom and
experience he’s picked up along the way.” - Jon Wilks, TradFolk

Last night I participated in a deeply inspiring event in London; Song Salon hosted by @mrrees_ . It was a coming together of songwriters and composers of all kinds; sitting together in a circle and taking turns to exhibit something that was still newly formed or in those early stages of craft. Besides the obvious magic in the music and performance, the result was a most powerful display of trust, care, generosity and kindness - a moving display of the beautiful qualities humans can be capable of.

I hadn’t fully understood the concept until I met with @mrrees_ beforehand… I hadn’t brought along anything half-written or semi-formed. So, I dashed back to my hotel room and started scribbling out poems and lyrics until a nostalgic anecdote about fishing on the river Dee in my teenage years tugged on the line.

I met up with my dear clàrsach-singer friend @annamcluckie for Chinese food on Brick Lane before heading over together to the event where, before singing her own mesmeric new Nan-Shepherd-inspired song, Anna held up my lyrics for me whilst I let my fiddle & voice interpret them in the flow of the moment.

So not only have I had an uplifting evening of creativity with friends old and new but I return with a new song within my being.

Thank you Will & Will of song salon, to @state51 and all the wonderful creatives present.

Magic!

“Felton Hall” (sic) from the James Reay MS Northumberland - with Rick Lines (uilleann pipes) in the corner of the White Lion Hotel, Glanyfferi, Cymru 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 March 2025.

I love playing with Rick. Life and distance gets in the way of us playing together as regularly as I would like but we do make sure to carve time out of our calendars. We continue our work in November and I’m very much looking forward to it.

Here we’re having a bit of fun; falling into the rolling, mesmeric movement of the tune and gradually picking the pace up.
