I wrote a muthaluvin’ BOOK!

I loooove books and I am GIDDY with excitement to hold one of my very own

In the midst of writing “in lieu of flwrz” the musical, I decided to also release a book of things that helped me through times of grief (writing, music, and slow cookin’) to accompany the production. “in lieu of flwrz” the book was born, and she is beauuutiful!

Pre-orders available June 29 with a special discounted rate for attendees of “in lieu of flwrz: a hip hop musical” Sunday, June 29 at 2pm at @newvillagearts in Carlsbad (ticket link in my bio).

Signed copies of the book will ship the second week of July.

“Hip Hop artist and playwright Miki Vale honors the spirit of loss through rhyme, rhythm, recipes, and a selection of new plays. Who’da thunk that a breakup 10 years ago would lead me to write a Hip Hop musical exploring the generational cycles we inherit and how they shape the way we learn to love?

This fall, my baby, “in lieu of flwrz: a hip hop musical” is making its way through five different spaces across San Diego County as part of San Diego Artist Incubator, a program of the City of San Diego.

Five dates. Five unique experiences. All free.

One year ago, we did this beautiful thing with this beautiful cast, and the most beautiful audience everrr.

“in lieu of flwrz: a hip hop musical” is a sonic journey tracing the rise and collapse of a love story between two women, Grace and Shay, played by @abundancewithkeomi and Eb Harvey. Told through movement and narrated by original music written and performed by me.

I wasn’t sure if people would make the trip up to Carlsbad to see it, but they did!

Thank you to everyone who made the trip, laughed with us, cried with us, bought the book, brought a friend or contributed in any way.

15 years ago @queenkandicole and I dropped this video to our song, “BLACK”.

Bringing it back today in honor of our favorite holiday.

Shot right down the street from my (then) Logan Heights neighborhood in San Diego.

Three years after the release of this video, I learned that my home had once been the Black Panther Party’s San Diego headquarters. In 1969, that house was raided and seven Black Panther Party members were taken into custody.

Today and every day we honor our ancestors. Their bravery is our permission. 🖤

Big ups to @_casis_ @mikivalethemc and @yvonnehchow for rocking our 3rd Annual #WomenInHipHop performance and panel this past Wednesday at @newdesignhigh! Your vulnerability and transparency resonated greatly with our entire 9th grade! The gems you dropped about taking up space, the ups and downs of working as professional artist and the importance of staying committed to your artistic passions was exactly the message that they needed to hear at this point of the school year! Your impact was definitely felt by students and faculty alike. 🙏🏽🙌🏽 A special shout-out to @loushiesty who, aside from taking over our music production elective this semester, also held down the panel with just the right balance of professionalism and swag no doubt! The young people are lucky to be able to rock the cipher with you!

"I've learned more about D.C.'s rich culture from the rehearsal process," says Miki Vale, "from music and fashion to even the sounds of nature."

Vale is speaking about her experience working as the sound designer and lyricist for a D.C.-inspired "As You Like It," at Folger Theatre through April 19.

Wild Side Media went behind the scenes with Vale and five other members of the "As You Like It" creative team to find out what they find most inspiring about this unique take on Shakespeare's sweet-natured comedy reinforcing the universal message of love is love.
