Mountain biker, gravel rider, roadie, alt cyclist, bikepacker—cycling has a knack for sorting us into increasingly specific groups, each with its own bikes, clothes, rules, and expectations.

In my latest piece, I discuss where I fit among them and make the case for being a ā€œcivilian cyclistā€ and how borrowing a little from each might make us happier.

Before I met up with @lamarchebikeco ahead of the @made.bike show, Chris from @firsthand.bike gave me a tour of their space and the areas inside the Chris King factory they’ll soon be taking over. The Firsthand Framebuilding School project is a big one, and I’m excited to check out the new school they’re building when it’s open! taken in Chris King Precision Components by @milesarbour

For the second year running, Neil and I set up outside Portland’s Zidell Yards to catch folks rolling into the 2026 MADE Bike Show and learn a little more about them and their bikes. We chatted with more than 60 attendees to check out their rigs and ask what they were most excited to see inside. The result is a wonderfully eclectic cross-section of bikes and the people who ride them.

I’ve been doing this thing recently where I take the busiest week of the year and then add on a few shop visits ahead of it. I figure, what’s another couple days of writing and editing when I’m doing it for 5+ anyways?

This time, I popped by @lamarchebikeco in Portland ahead of the @made.bike show. I’ve always been drawn to Tom’s playful aesthetic and functional creations, so it was great to sit down and chat about his strategies, how he keeps bikes fun, and his involvement with @firsthand.bike !

šŸ“āœØ New interview on the @kole.wtf website: Inside the Mind of a Bicycle Nerd, featuring @jarodbourdeau

ā€œIf you don’t let your curiosity take the reins from time to time, you’ll be hard pressed to come up with anything considered authentic to yourself.ā€

Get to know Jarod’s story, his approach to framebuilding, his obsession with bicycles, and the curiosity that drives him to experiment, learn and create in his own way. From the workshop to the trails, this is a conversation about craftsmanship, creativity, and what it really means to be a bicycle nerd. šŸ› ļøšŸš²

Special thanks to @milesarbour for the stunning photos featured in this post. šŸ™šŸ“ø

Why did @bikepackingcom Editor @milesarbour choose to spend his own cash on a Starling?

ā€œI wanted a full-suspension mountain bike suitable for the steep, often loamy, trails on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia.

I gravitated towards Starling because of their comparable winter climate (relatively mild, but wet) in Bristol, and because of the Murmur’s low-maintenance single-pivot suspension. I also resonated with Founder, Joe McEwan’s Instagram video ramblings and how he gets in front of the camera.

I built up my Murmur in December of last year, just as the rainy season arrived. After a fall of sloppy wet riding, a winter away in the desert, and returning to my Starling this spring, I’m certain it’s one of the most enjoyable squishy bikes I’ve ridden.

I generally stay pretty close to the ground, but it has allowed me to push a little harder on drops, rolls, and technical descents that I sometimes shy away from.

I’m also using the build to test some other parts I’m reviewing, but who says I can’t have a little fun while I’m at it?ā€ taken in Sunshine Coast BC Canada by @milesarbour
