When artist and printer truly collaborate 🤝 it results in artwork that couldn’t exist any other way. Read “The artist and the printer: A creative partnership unlike any other” on our blog to see how dialogue shapes the practice of printmaking. Link in Bio 🔗

WHAT IN THE WORLD IS PRINTMAKING?
A series of informational images that were made for our exhibition back in November last year. They were so popular that it was only natural to make them into posts using images from the studio.

Please join us in welcoming our upcoming Hartford Print Workshop Guest Artist: Edwige Charlot! ✨

We are excited to have Edwige working in our printmaking studios from Oct. 19 - 23 to produce an edition of work in collaboration with Master Printer Irene Michnicki from @milestonegraphics !

Edwige Charlot is a French-born Haitian immigrant artist and designer. As a descendant of the homeisland of Ayiti, Charlot uses nature-based motifs to grapple with Caribbean and Creole identities and culture. In their artistic practice, Charlot borrows from installation, collage, and printmaking to create works from a lexical visual Creole language. Their transdisciplinary approach blends and mixes media and techniques into a visual creole.

Charlot has been a presenter and panelist for the Americans for the Arts, Artist Communities Alliance Annual Conference, the College Art Association Annual Conference, Yale School of Art, Fordham University, World Council of Maine, and Bomb Diggity Arts, among many other prestigious accomplishments!

We cannot wait to welcome the artist and the master printer to our studios.

We would like to give special thanks to the Hartford Art School Endowment Inc. @haseinc for making this event possible.

Drypoint: Day 1
The first day was all about learning the materials, tools and how to transfer your image and start scratching it into the copper surface.

Swipe all the way through for bonus pictures of shop dog Baxter who checked up on the process the whole time.

Today’s forecast: lots of lines, scattered burrs, and a 100% chance of prints. 🌧️

Our drypoint workshop kicked off this morning while the rain and wind was going strong. But the only paper getting wet in here is the paper we soaked on purpose.

Stick around to see the results tomorrow 👀

More work towards the “Decameron” project by artist Nomi Silverman @nomis1203 🔎

When finished, this project will be an artist book including 100 lithographs inspired by “The Decameron”, a 14th century book by Italian writer Giovanni Boccaccio.

Follow along for more insight on the process and updates along the way. We’ve got a long road ahead of us still so there’s plenty more to see.

Panel discussion 🚨 Oct 30! With a group of fantastic artists and printers organized by the @ifpda 👏

@delosangelesart is a good friend & artist that we’ve had the pleasure of working with and we’re looking forward to hearing this conversation unfold. Find the link in bio to register for the online talk 🔗

“How does a drawing become a print—and how does a print continue to evolve long after it leaves the press? Bringing together artist Joyce Kozloff, artist María de Los Angeles, and master printer Judith Solodkin, this conversation traces the creative possibilities that emerge through collaboration, experimentation, and reinvention across generations of printmakers. The discussion begins with Kozloff’s groundbreaking lithographs produced at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in the early 1970s and her decades-long collaboration with Judith Solodkin, the first woman to graduate from Tamarind’s Master Printer program and founder of SOLO Impression Inc., as they reflect on the collaborative process of fine art lithography, in which an artist’s marks on stone, plate, or film are translated into a printable matrix through successive proofs and layers of color. As drawing becomes editionable, the print workshop becomes a place of dialogue, investigation, and technical discovery.

The conversation will consider printmaking not simply as a medium but as a way of thinking—one rooted in collaboration, revision, and continual transformation. By bringing together a pioneering master printer, an artist whose formative lithographic experiments shaped an interdisciplinary career, and an emerging artist expanding the possibilities of graphic art today, the panel highlights the enduring vitality of drawing and printmaking.

Moderated by Elisa Germán, Lunder Curator of Works on Paper and Whistler Studies, Colby College Museum of Art”
