Happy 2nd birthday to @broadrivermarket! A perfect excuse to make a long cake for the first time. I pretty much followed the recipe for Lemon Meringue Cake from my tattered Tartine book, but I added a little miel de guayaba to the caramel. The miel was a gift from @adavolkmer, who scoured Colombia to find the family who made this very special syrup.

Broad River Community Market has gardens on @oldnorthfarmwnc where they grow fresh food for folks in Cleveland County. This year, they’ve harvested over 2000 pounds of vegetables. All of it has been given away for free. Zoom into community and you will see people helping people. Mutual aid forever. 💚 by @milkglasspie

The assignment was surrealist garden party for our maximalist beloved, @fullgroanadult and her upcoming nuptials.

@julia_likes_red and I took inspiration from Salvador Dali and Marsha P. Johnson in her gorgeous flower crown, from plants and sacred rituals, insects and fever dreams drenched in abundance. We made it weird and beautiful. Julia made pizza people and radish mushrooms 🥹 and we let our love for Rebecca and her betrothed lead the way. I haven’t baked much lately, but when it’s for love and love only, I’m all the way in. 💜 Perfect pie backdrop by @gimmie.good.goodies.

The latest issue of @kitchentablemag is all about baking with a focus on whole grains. The issue features rad bakers, illustrations, recipes and stories weaving together science, devotion, culture, biodiversity and more.

I was honored to contribute a peek inside the Milk Glass Pie kitchen on @oldnorthfarmwnc, and share a recipe featuring @carolinaground’s Wrens Abruzzi rye. I was excited to see an interview with AVL friends @redfiddlevittles inside this issue too.

Long time listener, first time caller at @thisisfabchs where I spent three days in Charleston among hundreds of excellent womxn in F+B. It’a been awhile since I’ve joined a gathering like this one where I get to see old friends, connect with folks I’ve admired through internet portals, and meet new inspirations. @kateedwardsnyc, @eli_depalmer, and @kwiniland are my new heroes, btw.

I had the privilege of moderating panels on Impostor Syndrome (because I AM AN EXPERT!), How To Navigate Change (of which I am also a pro), and Giving + Receiving Feedback (cuz I like words and humans, ya know?). Every panelist brought their authenticity and wealth of experience to the conversation and I walked away smarter for it.

More than that I am reminded of what it takes to be in hospitality, whether running massive restaurant groups or a single small business, and it’s not just putting food and drink on the table. It’s skill and craft, care work and culture building, financial literacy and concretizing dreams into the ritual of ordinary days. It’s understanding people and caring for the whole of them. It’s fucking up and building systems to do better. It’s humility and self-interrogation. And it’s full of incredible, capable, unique womxn who give a shit. And wow, if that isn’t a hopeful thing to soak in and carry forward.

Sunday was the most perfect day for a Pie Party with my pal @nomadbakehousefl. We baked a beautiful menu, invited a few talented friends to sell their handcrafted goods, and hosted our beautiful community—Shelby friends and those who drove in from the mountains of WNC, Charlotte and South Carolina. We loved having @broadrivermarket and @kudzu_coalition_ with us sharing their good work. Special thanks to @camillecogswell and @oldnorthfarmer for holding down the welcome tent, @awehmueller for bringing the vibes, and to all our vendors, THANK YOU!

Pictured above is the blackberry pie we made in class at @carolinaground. One of the best compliments I hear is that the pie is “not too sweet.” As in, the fruit tastes like itself which is always, always what I want folks to taste— the ingredients, their essence and nature.
