Back in 1911, almost every big commercial bank in Bombay was controlled by the British. So on 21st December that year, Sir Sorabji Pochkhanawala started something different. A commercial bank owned and run entirely by Indians, with Sir Pherozeshah Mehta as its first chairman. It’s still counted as the first commercial bank in India to be fully Indian owned and managed.

It started with a subscribed capital of just ₹20 lakhs. A little over a decade later, the bank moved into the grand domed building you’re looking at right now, built at a cost of around ₹40 lakh.

And this building has a detail almost nobody notices unless they go looking for it. In 1926, it opened a safe deposit vault with a door that weighs about thirteen thousand kilograms, guarding over five thousand lockers inside. The Governor of Bombay himself showed up to open it.

There’s also a quieter piece of Mumbai geography here. This building sits just across from Bombay House, the Tata Group’s headquarters. So on one side of the road, you’ve got India’s biggest industrial empire. On the other, one of India’s earliest answers to British banking control.

What started as a stand against colonial finance is now just another heritage building that people walk past on their way to work, not realizing it was once someone’s act of rebellion.

IndiGo is already one of the most powerful names in Indian aviation. But its owners are now placing a much bigger bet on the Indian traveller.

Through InterGlobe, the group has been expanding across hotels, hospitality, food and other parts of the travel ecosystem. The logic is simple: if you already understand how millions of Indians travel, why stop at selling them a flight?

A traveller spends across multiple touchpoints: airfare, accommodation, dining and experiences. Owning more of that journey means a much larger share of the customer wallet.

That is what makes this interesting. IndiGo may be the most visible business today, but the broader ambition appears to be building an ecosystem around travel itself.
