Back in 1911, almost every big commercial bank in Bombay was controlled by the British. So on 21st December that year, Sir Sorabji Pochkhanawala started something different. A commercial bank owned and run entirely by Indians, with Sir Pherozeshah Mehta as its first chairman. It’s still counted as the first commercial bank in India to be fully Indian owned and managed.

It started with a subscribed capital of just ₹20 lakhs. A little over a decade later, the bank moved into the grand domed building you’re looking at right now, built at a cost of around ₹40 lakh.

And this building has a detail almost nobody notices unless they go looking for it. In 1926, it opened a safe deposit vault with a door that weighs about thirteen thousand kilograms, guarding over five thousand lockers inside. The Governor of Bombay himself showed up to open it.

There’s also a quieter piece of Mumbai geography here. This building sits just across from Bombay House, the Tata Group’s headquarters. So on one side of the road, you’ve got India’s biggest industrial empire. On the other, one of India’s earliest answers to British banking control.

What started as a stand against colonial finance is now just another heritage building that people walk past on their way to work, not realizing it was once someone’s act of rebellion.

SIPs are becoming the salary-day default for Indian investors.

Monthly contributions have crossed ₹32,000 crore, but the bigger shift happened recently: it took seven years to add the first ₹12,000 crore to the monthly SIP run rate, and just about two years to add the next ₹16,000+ crore.

India isn’t just investing more through SIPs. The pace at which fresh money is getting automated into markets has sharply accelerated.

There was a time when people like you and me used to own RBI.

This story begins here, at the institution that controls every rupee in your pocket.

When the Reserve Bank of India was established in 1935, it wasn’t a government body at all. It was a shareholders’ bank, funded by a public share sale that was the largest of its kind India had ever seen at the time.

For over a decade, the institution deciding India’s interest rates and printing its currency was, technically, privately owned.

Fun fact: This shareholder‑owned central bank/RBI didn’t just serve India. It acted as the central bank for Burma until 1947 and for Pakistan until the State Bank of Pakistan started in 1948.

That setup lasted until 1949. Two years after independence, the government bought back every single share and made it fully state owned, which is exactly how it still runs today. No shareholders, no dividends, just policy.

Everyone talks about earning. Not enough people talk about what comes after.

I’ve been trying to get better at that part too, and @millions.app has been a nice place to start without making investing feel intimidating.
