On May 15, 1969, President Nixon wrote HK (Henry Kissinger) "I hope the Biafrans Survive!" on the cover of a memo on the Biafran War that his National Security Advisor prepared for him.

Kissinger layed out gains and losses by both the Federal Military Government (FMG) under Gen. Gowon and Biafra under Gen. Ojukwu.

The brief offered a military and political update most likely based on the assessments of the CIA and INR--which is the State Department's own intelligence unit, whose director was also a former CIA analyst.

The memo seems to suggest that Kissinger was surprised Biafran forces were not doing more to sabotage oil production.

In November 1969, oil production did decline when Biafra more than doubled its airfoce to 11 planes from 5. At the same time the FMG acquired nearly two dozen 122 mm field guns and were inching them closer so they could destroy the Uli airport's runway (this information is in another memo).

To a large extent it became a proxy war between Britain which supported FMG and France which supported Biafra--both wanted the oil.

It's estimated anywhere from 500,000 to over one million people (mostly children) died from starvation due to the FMG's blockade.

In July 1969 President Richard Nixon told National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger that he wanted President Georges Pompidou to increase France's arms shipments to Biafra as Nixon seemed on the verge of recognizing Gen. Ojukwu's government.

Then when Biafra fell in January 1970 the CIA sent a memo to the White House showing that a French official admitted they'd backed Ojukwu not out of idealism but because he was bourgie and they wanted the oil.

He also expressed concern that even if France had "won"--they actually regarded it as their war not Biafra v. Nigeria--and Biafra had survived, the French feared Ojukwu would have eventually been overthrown by Leftist intellectuals.

"The real Ibo mentality is much farther to the left than that of Ojukwu..." the French official claimed.

The memo revealed France provided $30 million (or $300 million in 2026 dollars) in [materiel] to Biafra.

GEN. OJUKWU'S NOV. 6, 1969, RADIO BROADCAST CLOSED DOORS FOR BIAFRA.

Malcolm X once correctly stated 'Of all our studies, history is best qualified to reward our research.'

US government documents shed new light on the Nixon administration's policy toward Nigeria and the Biafran War as my new book 'The Day Biafra Died' shows.

Making decisions in the fog of war must be very difficult. On Nov. 6, 1969 Radio Biafra broadcast a statement by Gen. Ojukwu condemning the Nixon administration for trying to get him to agree to daytime landings of Red Cross relief flights at Uli airport. Gen. Gowon had already agreed, over the objection of his High Command for the planes to fly over Nigerian airspace. It was a contentious issue since on June 5, 1969 Nigerian MiG fighters had shot down a Red Cross plane, killing its American pilot and three European crew.

Ojukwu was unaware that accepting the proposal was a backdoor US strategy to get both sides to ceasefire and shift the advantage to Biafra. There was tremendous public pressure on Nixon in the US to intervene and stop the mass starvation deaths of children caused by the Nigerian Federal Military Government's blockade.

Secretly Nixon told Kissinger he wanted France under Pompidou (which wanted the oil located on Biafran territory) to supply more arms to Biafra and he also said he would personally 'run herd' on British Prime Minister Harold Wilson to cut off arms shipments to Nigeria

Those plans never materialized after Radio Biafra broadcast Ojukwu's statement on Nov. 6, 1969..

That was essentially the Day Biafra died as an independent Republic.

THE DAY BIAFRA DIED

In 1969 Biafra was the Gaza of 2024 with shocking images of children dying from starvation, in Biafra's case as a result of the blockade by Nigeria's Federal Military Government (FMG).

US public pressure increased for the Nixon administration to act on the mass starvation as evening news showed reels of emaciated children with bloated bellies, victims of Kwashiokor, as federal troops pushed forward.

On May 29, 1969 a Columbia University undergrad, Bruce Mayrock died after he set himself on fire on the grounds of the United Nations in front of horrified diplomats. The incident was covered in a New York Times story and in the Columbia Spectator on May 30, 1969. He left behind a note saying he was protesting Genocide in Biafra.

Even Segregationist Senator Strom Thurmond called on Nixon to intervene with direct relief shipments to Biafra with or without permission from the Federal military government headed by Gen. Gowon.

Others like Senator Ted Kennedy called for Biafran recognition, which Nixon seemed leaning toward. Nixon told Kissinger he was taking control of Biafra policy away from the State Department because Secretary of State William Rogers supported the Federal government.

Nixon finally made up his mind to fully support Biafra after reading a July 10, 1969 full page advertisement in The New York Times calling for intervention, whose sponsors included Rep Ed Koch and the writer/public intellectual James Baldwin and many other prominent Americans.

Then Gen. Ojukwu, who was not aware of Nixon's new approach, took a decision that sent things in a different direction.

Attached are screenshots of how the Times covered the Mayrock protest followed by a few pages from 'The Day Biafra Died' which is now at the printer.
