**THE DAY BIAFRA DIED — BUT DID THE STORY END THERE?**

What really happened in the final days of the Nigerian Civil War?

In this special edition of **African News Review**, we are joined by journalist, author and publisher **Milton Allimadi**, author of *The Day Biafra Died*, for a conversation about Biafra, Nigeria and the international forces that shaped the war.

We’ll examine the questions that are often missing from conventional accounts:

🇳🇬 The origins of the Nigerian Civil War
⛽ Oil and the struggle over resources
🇬🇧 Britain's role and strategic interests
🇫🇷 France and its relationship with Biafra
🇷🇺 Soviet military support for Lagos
🇺🇸 Richard Nixon and the question of U.S. recognition
📰 Western media and the images of Biafran suffering
🌍 The OAU and African diplomacy
✊🏿 The survival of Biafran nationalism after 1970

And one central question:

**Did Biafra simply lose a civil war—or did international geopolitics help determine its fate?**

Join us as we interrogate the archive, challenge familiar narratives and place Biafra within the wider history of postcolonial Africa.

Ugandan American journalist Milton Allimadi draws a powerful distinction between being poor and being impoverished. Being poor means lacking resources and capabilities, but being impoverished is a systemic condition where individuals and communities are exploited, preventing them from fully using what they already have. Allimadi argues that Africa can overcome this cycle if its nations take control of their natural and economic resources, demand fair compensation, and hold interest groups, corporations, and foreign powers accountable through proper taxation and regulation. By asserting control and uniting around shared prosperity, African countries can transform the continent into a powerful, thriving supercontinent—where wealth, opportunity, and influence belong firmly to Africans themselves.

Jamaica: Struggle in the Periphery is a political memoir and analytical work by former Jamaican Prime Minister Michael Manley that chronicles his administration’s turbulent tenure from 1972 to 1980. In the book, Manley details his government's ambitious attempt to implement Democratic Socialism and forge a "Third Path" for development—one independent of both Western capitalism and Soviet communism. He argues that Jamaica, as a developing nation situated on the geopolitical "periphery," faced systematic destabilization from "core" powers, particularly the United States, due to his non-aligned foreign policy and refusal to adhere strictly to free-market orthodoxy. The text provides a first-hand account of the crushing economic pressures imposed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the violence that marred the 1980 elections, and the structural hurdles that post-colonial nations face when attempting to assert genuine economic sovereignty in a global system dominated by superpowers.

Milton Allimadi's Manufacturing Hate traces the systemic pattern of racist stereotypes about Africa in Western media, ranging from the journals of early European explorers to modern news outlets like The New York Times. The book argues that these dehumanizing narratives were deliberately constructed to justify slavery, colonialism, and the continued economic exploitation of the continent's resources. By analyzing centuries of reporting, Allimadi exposes how institutionalized bias has perpetuated the myth of African inferiority and obscured the reality of the continent's history and resistance.

Abdulrahman Mohamed Babu (1924 - 1996) was a Zanzibari revolutionary and Pan-Africanist theorist who played a pivotal role in the 1964 Zanzibar Revolution and the subsequent formation of Tanzania. He went on to serve as a cabinet minister in the new government of Tanzania, where he remained a vocal critic of imperialism. Babu was also a close friend and comrade of Malcolm X, first meeting him in Cairo in 1964 and helping to introduce him to other African revolutionary leaders. Babu spent his later life in exile in London, where he remained a formidable intellectual force, authoring the seminal work African Socialism or Socialist Africa? and advocating for Marxist principles until his death in 1996.
