This was the live view I had on September 11, 2001, from the roof of what was then CNN’s New York offices across from Penn Station. I was a young journalist working behind the scenes amidst the chaos, to help with the breaking news coverage.

A couple year prior, I’d made a decision to avoid covering war zones. And yet. On September 11, 2001, I found myself inside one in Manhattan, my adopted city at the time. Fighter jets roared overhead, even though the entire country’s air space was closed.

I watched the towers burn, while I ran wire copy to the anchors from a makeshift computer station on the roof. They were standing in front of a camera with the aftermath of the attack raging behind them. That exact back drop pictured in this photo.

At a certain point, I had to go to the control room. I was about to head inside when a strange rumbling made me pivot right when the South Tower came crashing down. As I watched the building vanish, I understood immediately it wasn’t just a structure down, it was an unthinkable number of lives lost.

2,977 people were killed that day, including 343 firefighters and 60 police officers, who made the ultimate sacrifice in their efforts to save others.
