A huge thank you to Mariana van Zeller and her team at Nat Geo for including me in the latest episode for “Trafficked with Mariana van Zeller,” which focuses on the ongoing sex trafficking of Vietnamese women and girls to China.

The episode is harrowing and infuriating, with Mariana and her team embedding themselves in the traffickers’ dangerous world. It was also great to see the important prevention work of my former NGO, Pacific Links Foundation, featured along with Mr. Long of the Lao Cai DOLISA who has been a tireless, longtime advocate for the protection of Vietnamese women & girls, particularly ethnic minorities along the border.

The traffickers’ routes and methods will evolve and adapt to changing conditions, but the demand will remain a constant for so long as women and girls remain undervalued as members of society, but assigned higher value as a “product” on the market.

Vietnam currently has the 3rd highest gender birth disparity rate in the world behind China & India, which will cause a projected shortage of 1.5 million of marriageable and working age by 2034 (less than 10 years away), according to the government’s General Statistics Office.

We’re already one of the top sources for trafficking & labor exploitation victims in Asia and Europe, and we risk becoming a trafficking destination if we don’t address the gender inequality that is at the root of so many of our demographic & development problems.

It’s such an honor (and still surreal!) to be included by @tatlervietnam on the same list of Asia’s Most Influential people as archeologist and professor Dr. Nguyễn Thị Hậu; former Principal of Hoa Sen University Dr. Bùi Trân Phượng; and Madame Tôn Nữ Thị Ninh, former VN Ambassador to EU, Belgium, & Luxembourg, and who I’ve known for many years through her work in social and community development.
