I've loved this song for a very long time, but its never felt more real to me than it does now

One of the key moments that sparked the song happened in 1963, when Cooke and his entourage were turned away from a whites-only motel in Shreveport

Despite being a successful and well-known artist, he was denied a room purely because he was Black. When he protested, the police were called, and he was arrested

That experience shook him—but it wasn’t just anger

It was something deeper: a recognition of the weight of history, and the longing for dignity and change

Around the same time, Cooke heard Blowin’ in the Wind by Bob Dylan. He was struck by how a white artist had written something so honest about racial injustice. It stirred something in him—almost like a calling. He reportedly felt: why haven’t I written something like this?

And then the song came

“A Change Is Gonna Come” carries a kind of spiritual gravity. It isn’t just protest—it’s prayer, prophecy, and surrender all at once. Lines like “It’s been a long, a long time coming…” feel less like lyrics and more like truth rising up through generations

It was also quite different from his usual music

Cooke was known for smoother, lighter love songs—but this was something else entirely. He even seemed a little hesitant about it at first, as though he knew it carried a deeper weight

Not long after recording it, Cooke tragically died in December 1964. The song was released just after, and it became one of the defining voices of the Civil Rights Movement—sung at marches, carried in hearts

There’s something timeless about it. It doesn’t just belong to that moment—it speaks to any time where change feels both far away… and inevitable.
If you sit with it quietly, it almost feels like a remembering: that even through struggle, something is moving… and has always been moving… toward light taken in Whitley Bay by @mind_matter_magic

Our recent trip to Tunisia 🇹🇳

A lovely beach getaway to relax and recharge.

First time visiting this area and the sea was pretty much perfect.

Too hot for many daytime trips but we ventured out to see part of Carthage ruins & an interesting blue and white town of Sidi Bou Said (The Santorini of Tunisia) and an evening in the Medina. Despite not wanting to go into any shops they are very persuasive and we ended up haggling over the price of some spices and a bottle of hair conditioner that we didn't even want!

All good fun. We will have to go back when it's cooler to do some more exploring.

I was having a rest day on Thursday, so I thought I'd try writing another song

This one was very cathartic to write, as it speaks to an experience I've had again and again in my lifetime

🙏

And that is the feeling that someone doesn't really want me full of myself

And then there's the feeling that I don't want to leave them because I feel sorry for them

(Because I still do feel sorry for people who think that they can control people, and that extraction can ever be used as a means of fulfilment)

And then there's the despair that comes with the inevitable self abandonment... because pity isn't compassion, and giving something that wasn't meant to be taken will never bring joy

And finally there's the moment of truth (which i feel fits nicely into the bridge of this song), the moment you realise you can't save someone, if they can't learn how to give and receive, because they are afraid

😢

That's the sad part

But the happy part is that many people have helped me in this life by showing me the way back to myself

Not by rescuing me

But by guiding me

🙏

I think this is probably the most beautiful thing about being alive...

The experience of others

They either teach us, or give to us, and this in turn allows us to give so much more in return

This in its essence is truly beautiful

💗

I hope the people that have helped me know how much it means, and its usually not the big things, or even always the closest people that helped me at those crucial moments

I hope the people who hurt me find the strength to change, but I won't hold onto resentment because I've certainly hurt people too taken in Whitley Bay by @mind_matter_magic

Im celebrating the therapeuticness of belting

Im not entirely happy with this because the first time I say 'love' the pitch is well off

And also I got the chords wrong at the end

But that isn't the point

The point is that belting is therapeutic and empowering

Especially for any woman growing up in this era because we have mostly been told to shut up

And to belt, you have to chill out, open your mouth wide (surprising how much my survival instincts dont want me to do this) you have to be in touch with yourself

So im celebrating that im doing it, that its not perfect and that my ego isn't getting in the way with some lame story about how ill have no friends or people will bully me or god knows what other lies it thinks up

Thank you life 🙏 by @mind_matter_magic

There are so many lies and distraction out there

There are so many ways to be a victim

And i dont mean victim in a condescending or hurtful way, because we all fall, and its always painful

There are truths that the ego lie doesn't want us to see

The ego doesnt want us to be free because then we'll stop feeding it

But the truth is we arent meant to suffer, we are just meant to live and love by @mind_matter_magic

More of a note (or love letter) to myself than a post

I don't know if loving myself is just the same as loving another anyway

Since, deep down inside we are all made of the same material, and I know this to be true

Unlike most things, which I'm still figuring out

Maybe it's a good thing I don't have it all figured out

Maybe the mystery of life, and the joy of surrendering to love is the reason all of us are here

Maybe we are here to learn to love

Maybe the nectar that we taste after loving, is what we are searching for after all

✨️

Lately I've been feeling sorry for people who pursue other things

Because they look lost, and i can't help them

At least, I can't tell them how I feel because they won't listen

Maybe one day things will be different

But I'm not going to wait for that day

✨️

Maybe that's what real power looks like

When you know what you can change, and what you can't

✨️

Maybe one day ill make this into a song, to soften the truth of it, so that people can hear it

Or, maybe one day, the world will be different

And I won't need to explain myself to feel understood

✨️

I'm not sorry for myself that I'm misunderstood

Because I've had the deepest lesson in mastery of the self

And that's really just learning how to love
