Some of you might be wondering.. What has Minda been up to? Follow my journey and my take on all things film and screenwriting. I took my first screenwriting class at UCLA in 2020, and Insecure was my first spec. Now, I am writing and directing my own films.

“I jumped out of the window of corporate America, and women caught me.”

@mindaharts said that when I asked her about what it was like to pivot out of the corporate job she had worked tirelessly to get. And she said it to a room full of women who’ve done exactly that for each other.

We recorded this one live, in a room of 100 women who build media for a living, all gathered for a summit, put on by @theriveterco and aptly named The Gathering.

If you’ve ever been in a room full of women and felt totally supported, and like everyone there just wants to help everyone else win, you know exactly the kind of magic I’m talking about.

This week’s She Pivots episode starts with a girl who worked the Dairy Queen counter to help cover her family’s light bill. The first in her family to go to college, and the first to land in corporate America, where she spent years as the only Black woman in the room.

Over time, she diminished herself so everyone else could stay comfortable.

Then came one day where it all came crashing down. Crying in the parking lot, with Whitney Houston on the radio, Minda asked the question: where do the broken hearts go of women who can’t take their workplace anymore?

She didn’t quit that day. Too many people were counting on her. What she did was start a blog.
It turned into The Memo, a Number 1 bestseller.

Then came the other books. A company. A film in festivals.

She spent years making herself smaller, and then built an entire career making sure the next woman gets treated like a whole person.

We get into all of it: the car, the four years she spent building a way out while still clocking in, and what trust really looks like.

Every time I get the opportunity to work on a new film, casting is one of my favorite parts of the process, because you get to find your people.

I immediately called @zspiegelcasts to help me cast my upcoming short film The List. Relationships can be tough, but what happens when the one who gave everything finally stops?
