What Is BPS Accreditation and Why Does It Matter?

Dr. Melody Smith
Clinical Psychologist (PsychD)
Specialisation: ADHD, Autism, Neurodevelopmental Assessment, Parenting Support
Regulatory Body: HCPC
Based in: Croydon, England

Thinking about becoming a clinical psychologist? Before planning your doctorate application, there’s an important qualification detail to check. šŸŽ“
In this video, Clinical Psychologist Dr. Melody Smith explains what British Psychological Society (BPS) accreditation means and why it matters for aspiring clinical psychologists.
An accredited course meets the BPS’s academic standards for psychology. For UK clinical psychology training, the key requirement is Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC)—usually gained through an eligible BPS-accredited psychology degree or conversion course.
Not sure where you stand? Check your course’s accreditation, ask your university whether your qualification confers GBC, and review the entry requirements of the doctorate courses you’re considering. If you studied overseas, the BPS can assess your qualifications.
Getting this clear early can help you understand your next steps and prepare with greater confidence.
Save this reminder, share it with an aspiring psychologist, and watch Dr. Smith’s explanation. 🧠

šŸŽ„ Why Does the Body Matter in Therapy?

Davey Murphy
Psychotherapist
Specialisation: Trauma, Men's Issues, Individual Therapy
Regulatory Body: BACP Accredited
Based in: Portsmouth and Southampton, England

A bouncing leg. Fidgeting hands. Shifting around in a chair. Sometimes, there’s more being communicated than words alone can express.
In this video, relational psychotherapist Davey Murphy explains why he pays attention to the body alongside what someone says in a session.
His approach begins with safety and curiosity. Instead of asking someone to stop moving or making them feel self-conscious, he creates space to explore what they’re experiencing: ā€œI wonder what’s going on for you.ā€
The meaning of a movement is something to explore together. For some people, including those communicating in a second language or autistic clients who find it difficult to put feelings into words, bodily experiences can offer another way into that conversation.
Davey also reflects on how this awareness can continue beyond therapy—helping people notice their reactions and develop a better understanding of how they feel.
Watch to hear why he believes the body deserves a place in the therapeutic conversation. 🧠

Is Porn Addiction a Real Thing?

Dr. Paula Hall
Sexual and Relationship Psychotherapist | Founder, The Laurel Centre and Pivotal Recovery
Specialisation: Sex and Pornography Addiction, Compulsive Sexual Behaviour
Regulatory Body: BACP Accredited | UKCP Registered | COSRT Senior Accredited
Based in: London, England

What do we mean when we talk about ā€œporn addictionā€, and when does a behaviour become a problem?
Dr. Paula Hall explains that the clinical term is compulsive sexual behaviour disorder (CSBD). She also explores why these difficulties can extend beyond pornography to other sexual behaviours and online interactions.
One of her most important points concerns the relationship between behaviour and emotion: the problem isn’t defined simply by what someone does, but by the dependency on that behaviour to change how they feel.
That shifts the conversation towards the purpose the behaviour serves. Is it becoming something a person feels they need to manage difficult emotions? How much control do they feel they have, and how is the pattern affecting their life and relationships?
Dr. Hall’s perspective encourages a more thoughtful, compassionate discussion—one that looks beyond labels to understand what may be happening underneath.

How Can You Make Decisions That Support the Whole Family?

Sarah Wheatley
Psychotherapist | Birth and Beyond
Specialisation: Perinatal Mental Health, Parent-Infant Therapy, Birth Trauma, EMDR
Regulatory Body: BACP Accredited | EMDR UK Registered
Based in: Portobello, Scotland

šŸ¤ Changing one part of your baby’s routine can affect everything else—from feeding and sleep to work and relationships.
In this reel, Sarah Wheatley shares three considerations for navigating those decisions:
• Think of your family as an ecosystem, where everyone’s needs matter.
• Consider the relationships surrounding your baby, including your connection with your partner.
• Accept that there may be no perfect choice. Sometimes, the best available option still involves compromises.
This perspective can help ease the pressure to achieve perfection while keeping the whole family in view. You do not have to get every decision perfect to care thoughtfully for your family.

Save this reel for a moment when parenting decisions feel overwhelming.

🧠 Understanding the relationship between yoga, trauma and nervous system regulation.

Dr. Stephanie Minchin
Clinical Psychologist and Yoga Therapist | The Yoga Psychologist
Specialisation: Trauma-Informed Practice, Yoga Therapy
Regulatory Body: HCPC | BPS
Based in: London, England

The amygdala plays an important role in detecting threats and initiating the body’s protective response. Following trauma, this response can become more sensitive, contributing to heightened vigilance and reactivity.
In this reel, Dr. Stephanie Minchin explores how chanting, breathing and movement may influence the brain’s stress response. She discusses the role of vagal pathways, GABA and the prefrontal cortex in understanding yoga’s potential contribution to emotional regulation.
🧘Yoga may offer complementary support for mental wellbeing, with individual needs and experiences guiding its use.

Neurodivergent Mental Health: The Importance of Adapted Care

Dr. Cloie Parfitt
Psychotherapist | Founder, Diverse Minds Therapy
Specialisation: Neurodiversity-Affirming Therapy, Autism, Trauma Regulatory Body: MBACP
Based in: Online, UK

šŸ¤Understanding individual needs is essential to effective mental health support.
In this reel, Dr. Cloie Parfitt discusses how neurodivergent distress can be overlooked or misunderstood, particularly when care does not account for masking, sensory needs and inaccessible environments.
She highlights the importance of neurodiversity-affirming, trauma-informed care: recognising individual needs, providing appropriate accommodations and developing a collaborative therapeutic approach.
Listening to people when they say an intervention is not helping—and being willing to adapt—is central to this approach.
Support should promote belonging, accommodation and validation.
ā“What changes would make mental health support more accessible to neurodivergent people?

A highlight of our Amsterdam experience: Our founder, @maytha.maktoum, joined Professor Sverker Sikström for a fireside chat at World Summit AI 2026, as part of the AI for Health & Humanity track.
At the heart of their conversation was a question that continues to shape our thinking at mindfriend:
How do we make AI more emotionally intelligent without making it clinically irresponsible?
It’s a question that asks us to consider both the possibilities of AI and the responsibility that comes with supporting people in vulnerable moments. Warmth, trust, and understanding matter—and so do boundaries and knowing when human care is needed.
Beyond the stage, Amsterdam gave our team meaningful connections, fresh perspectives, and conversations that continued long after the session ended.
This diary captures a little of that experience, from the fireside chat to the moments we shared behind the scenes. šŸ’œ
Thank you to @worldsummitai and the entire organising team for welcoming @mindfriend__ and bringing together voices across technology, psychology, healthcare, and humanity. To everyone who connected with us, asked a thoughtful question, or shared a perspective—thank you šŸ¤
We’re taking those conversations home with us.
