For Mayuko Fukino-Mayhill, perspective began with a simple but powerful habit: listening.

Growing up, her grandparents were always asking questions. They wanted to hear about her experiences, how she felt, and what she was learning from the world around her... and they truly listened.

That curiosity shaped the way she now approaches storytelling, culture, and connection.
Her parents added another layer to that perspective by taking her to many different places as she grew up.

Through travel, Mayuko learned something that continues to guide her life today. There is always more than one way to see the world.

By listening to other people and observing how they live, think, and move through life, she began to understand that perspective expands when we allow ourselves to learn from others.

That curiosity about people and their stories now shapes the work she does today.

Watch this one and reflect on the people who helped shape the way you see the world.

Meet Mayuko Fukino-Mayhill.

Author. Storyteller. Japanese language and culture teacher.

Mayuko’s work centers on the power of 伝承 (densho) - the passing down of stories from one generation to the next. She believes storytelling is not just about remembering the past, but about shaping how we live in the present and what we carry into the future.

As an educator and a parent of four, Mayuko has seen firsthand how narratives influence identity, empathy, and global understanding. Through traditional folktales and cultural history, she invites audiences to slow down, listen deeply, and recognize the threads that connect us across time and place.

Her message is rooted in compassion and shared humanity.

On March 28, Mayuko brings that perspective to the TEDx Sugar Creek Women stage.

What stories are shaping you?

🌟 Reflecting on My TEDx Experience 🌟

On March 28, I had the incredible opportunity to speak at @tedxsugarcreekwomen on the red dot 🔴, marking a significant milestone in a trail that began back in October. My talk focused on the Art of Densho and explored the concept of the Watershed of Wisdom. This experience was both exhilarating and transformative.

✨ Gratitude Corner ✨
I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported me along the way:

🌸Facilitators: Your guidance helped me find my voice.

🌸Coaches: Thank you for pushing me beyond my limits and believing in my potential.

🌸Volunteers: your love and compassion behind the scenes didn’t go unnoticed and how you made me feel make me smile 2 months after 🥰

🌸Speaker Sisters: Your camaraderie made this journey more enjoyable and empowering.

🌸My New and old Friends: Your love and support are appreciated daily.

🌸My family far or near: without Your unwavering love and support, I would not be the person I am today 🙇‍♀️🐉

Embracing my heritage, I am deeply grateful for the guidance to become a person who guide people and leaders move from being story consumers to discovering the Watershed of Wisdom. Together, we can use our heritage to foster powerful global citizenship and create a sense of true belonging.🌊🌎💫

I’m excited to share insights in my upcoming workshop on how to fear bust, where we’ll explore strategies to overcome challenges and embrace the art of speaking with confidence.

🎥 To my friends, family, students, and supporters waiting for the TEDx link, I can’t wait to share the moment with you once it’s live! It is almost here!!!! 💝

Thank you all for being part of my Tsubaki Trails. Your support means the world to me! 🙏💖

Day 2 to do share my Moment to Meaning and with my one liner quote! Of course I got cut off… 😆

Moment to Meaning:
Moment: Discovering my grandmother’s kimono and reflecting on the stories that represents the kimonos.

Meaning: the profound connection between personal heritage and identity, illustrating how our backgrounds shape who we are and foster deeper connections with others.

One-Liner Quote
“Embracing our heritage transforms personal stories into powerful connections that enrich our lives.”

I can’t wait for tomorrow Day 3 of Mic Drop Bootcamp!!!

I thought I could handle the obi alone. I was wrong. 👘
.
12 days ago on the TEDx stage, I shared that we are losing our sense of belonging because we try to be too ‘self-sufficient.’ I learned this lesson the hard way during my preparation—wrestling with silk and trying to find my center alone.
.
Standing on that red dot to share “The Densho Way” wasn’t a solo act—it was a collective watershed (Ryuiki). 🌊
.
Today, my heart is full of gratitude for the “guides” who helped me find my center. To my coaches and the @TEDxSugarCreekWomen team: thank you for receiving my story with honor and helping it flow.
.
You didn’t just help me with a speech; you helped me become a ‘story steward’ of my own mission. 🌸
.
As I prepare to take these lessons from Kumano to Camino, I want to know: Who is the ‘guide’ keeping you centered right now? Tag them below! 👇
.
(I’ve shared a thank you to the incredible watershed of souls who made this possible in the comments! ⬇️)

Once upon a time, there was a little girl who loved making up stories.

The girl loved telling stories to trees, flowers. animals, and maybe to stars. Maybe sometimes to her friends and perhaps in her class. And she knew that she would tell stories to her children and maybe to her grandchildren in the future.

She never thought that she’d tell stories to a big crowd sharing how important it is to receive and pass on stories to others.

She did it.

That girl is me.

I shared my perspective on the red dot at TEDxSugar Creek Women on the 28th of March, 2026.

I will share more in near future.

I wanted to share how grateful I am to all the people who made @tedxsugarcreekwomen happen in 2026, all the beautiful 14 other speakers and my friends and my family 💝

I am deeply grateful for this experience and cannot wait what will unfold. 🙇‍♀️🌸🐉🌎
