الحمدلله

From the age of 10, I have always wanted to write. Whether it was horror stories or tales inspired by my favourite films and TV shows, my hands and fingers would get tired from writing and typing. I would often delete my work as I never felt it was worthy of being read by others.

Now, I have come to a stage in my life where I no longer think twice before doing something I love. I no longer outweigh the pros and cons because if I have passion, I will do anything to achieve my goals and make my dreams a reality.

Today, 10 year old Tasnim's dream came true. Today marks the day 40 year old Tasnim will be proud of her 24 year old self. Alhamdulillah.

I took 3 books with me on holiday thinking I’d get through at least one 🤭 got through 109 pages on my trip and I’m enjoying this slow, dreamy read. The perfect book to come back home to as well, and it was an airport grab!

This felt like a parody of Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine and Gone Girl but it did make a good gym-listen nevertheless! I thought of a better plot twist. I don’t know what my next McFadden book will be but I sure do have a list to get through even if these are average! by @mindintheskies

I think I wasn’t in the right headspace for this so I DNFd it, 70% in. There’s parts that were truly horrifying to read/listen to and generally speaking there’s a lot going on with switching between POVs and I really couldn’t keep up with all the characters. I do want to engage more about the Viet Nam war but not through this book which confused me with all the jumping around. I know there’s a character map at the beginning but navigating this on a Kindle is a task in itself, let alone when listening to the audiobook version as well. I probably need something a little lighter this time of year.

I might give this a go again in the future, who knows! by @mindintheskies

This took me back to uni days as he read so much of Bell Hooks for our preliminary reading for a couple of modules.

I’ve always loved her work and we continue to do so I think it’s extraordinary that the things that we talk about in terms of feminine love and The softness required in acquiring women’s rights in our society especially when it’s still being explained through patriarchal, neocolonial and neoliberal perspectives.

Although this book was written before a lot of societal change and is rooted in experiences prominent in the late 1900s, a lot of the cultural connotations around love, gender stereotypes, acts of love, and the role of a woman have shifted since then. How we express our desires, needs and preferences in relationships and friendships feels different now which is so good to reflect on.

What I really wanted more of was friendship. Especially in the chapter on communion, I was hoping for more on love between girls and women - that solidarity, that comfort, that sisterhood. I wanted a chapter that just centred the female experience. While it’s important to touch on patriarchy, challenging patriarchal norms and trauma, I found it frustrating that it kept circling back to that.

I love Bell Hooks, but I did get increasingly bored due to the repetition. I did enjoy a lot of it , including her writing on women’s roles in families and in the workspace, and that economic drive to balance career, education and relationships.

I just wanted a bit more. When I saw people talking about this book I was so interested to read it, but I feel like a lot of what people say about it is based on their own interpretation, and they were probably in a different headspace to me. I definitely enjoyed All About Love a lot more, so I’ll probably give that a re-read at some point in the next few months.

I do have lots of quotes and passages tabbed in this book though, and I have some key personal takeaways, so perhaps I just need to look for more relatable articles to sit alongside it.

I really enjoyed the latter two thirds of this book especially as it picks up a lot in the last 100 pages. Ayoola and Korede’s relationship is so messy, but they both have loyalty and commitment to each other no matter how selfish Ayoola truly is.

Tade gets on my last nerves but I will keep this spoiler free 🤐

The only thing that I struggled with is the shorter chapters, making the reader jump through so many loops. I felt like I was trying to keep up a lot of the time. by @mindintheskies

Yep I jumped on the bandwagon and decided to read these two, just to get out of the slump a bit more. I don’t mind a good predictable book. McFadden’s writing is definitely very bland and non-descriptive but I enjoyed the twists in the story. The second book was so boring in the first half and I wanted to put it down at several points, but I kept going on and I surprisingly enjoyed the rest of the book! I don’t think I’ll read the third book though, I’ve had enough of Millie 😂 by @mindintheskies

Mixed feelings about this one as I was so lost through half of the story. The prose is interesting, there’s a lot of great references to wider societal issues and personal experiences which is great but it just felt a bit flat sometimes. I couldn’t enjoy the poetry to be honest, and perhaps a bit too much vulgarity for my liking.

I was listening along with the audiobook too which did help. by @mindintheskies
