How was Built to Last? The post everyone has been waiting for.

Built to Last is one of my many proud accomplishments for the year, and more
importantly this season of my life. This was my first time fully curating a show that featured artists alongside myself. I have put together events in the past, but never to this magnitude and a major part of that was because of the contributions of @chloepearl____ . I haven’t ever had someone with me through the conceptualization stages of my work, and I learned a lot during the last 6 months.

Because of the intention and care BOTH of us brought to the table, Built to Last was a memorable, fun, and community driven night. And I had someone say to me recently that the way the artist’s stories were told makes BTL feel like more than just an event. Which is what I always wanted. So many times visual artists stories are overlooked or we are never brought into conversations we have REAL opinions on. So it was crucial to create a platform that gave you all a lens into who these creatives really are.

The main attraction of Built to Last was the Workwear Auction, a concept I had countless organizations brush off as a “silly little endeavor.” Well as a whole the Built to Last Auction was able to raise $4,302 for @artsandscraps and @dfops313 . And its gets even silly-ER. This project invested over $8k back into the creative economy through artist stipends, hiring performers, and funding content creation. So let this be yet another testament that when I say I’m going to do something, we doing that shit, and the people I work with are no different.

I want to thank all the people who contributed to the event. Everyone who travelled from out of town. Everyone who helped set up and tear down. And thank yous go to everyone who just encouraged me along this journey.

Four years ago, while working on a grant application with @onlyonelhauren , I learned hope was a cognitive function not a meaningless emotion. This realization changed my entire world and the way I move through it.

Last month we sat down with 4 neighborhoods on the Eastside of Detroit and talked about hope, memories, and murals. These listening sessions have only increased my love for the area I now call home.

Detroit, this project is my love letter to you, to your people, to your land. Art is about more than creating beautiful things, it is about changing the way we experience and see the world around us.

Our final Listening Session with @citywallsdetroit is for the Riverbend neighborhood THIS Thursday 04/23
Time : 6PM
Location : 2642 Anderdon Ave
Detroit, MI, United States

I gotta say this is hands down one of my murals I’m the most proud of thus far in my career. Not only was I able to use some of my friends for visual reference, but I really felt this one come alive. Perhaps this one felt different because I started out with a more basic mock up than what I usually provide, but I feel confident enough in my work now and like my clients know why they’re hiring me. A true blessing as an artist.

The “Homeplace” Mural is located on the 2nd Floor of Kedzie Hall on MSU’s campus as a new landmark for the African American and African Studies Department.

It’s hard to say what my favorite part of this mural is. I love the way the students are interacting with each other. I love the colors. I love the grass and every night before I packed up, I would just sit there like I was in that lush field too.

Thank you to Liv, Dr. Suban, and Dr. Ruth Nicole for welcoming me into this space and letting me create something for US. Thank you for your patience. Thank you for treating me like a human… especially one that’s growing another human. Somebody or something is smiling down on @aaasmsu , and I feel it when I walk through those doors.

Also excuse the language of Sir Jermaine Cole… but he said what he said🤷🏽‍♀️ taken in North Kedzie Hall by @mindofmila

Before summer ended I had a very special opportunity to interview @swfreddy during the @swfestdetroit takeover for Fridays at the Station inside @michigancentraldetroit . This evening was different from the other episodes we’ve filmed because it was recorded in front of a live audience.

Freddy and I discussed his transition from graffiti to public art, affordable materials, and how to work with big brands.

I throughly enjoyed our conversation not only for the many laughs shared, but also because getting to know other artists is ALWAYS interesting.

Big thanks to @gabrielxduran , @1inamelyion , @saratheproducer , and agiconstructionsolutions for helping bring this to the public. AND of course to my producer @story_marq !

It takes a heroic effort to show up, dress up, and represent your art. That’s why artists are our heroes. Without them, an art fair is just a big room.

Today is your last day to show up for them at #superfairDC. Our artists want nothing more than to share their journey, perspective, and unique story with you.

Grab a ticket in advance at our bio or just show up to 737 7th Street NW any time from 11am to 6pm. Our artists and their incredible work are here and excited to meet you.

See you at the fair 💛

I have been working my pah-too-tee off! This last week I had back to back days in the studio grinding out a few new pieces for my show later this week with @thesuperfair in DC. Last year in November I had the pleasure of presenting, and the fair was a success, mind you that was amidst a government shut down!

I’m so excited to share pics once my pieces are all framed, and hung on my wall. I have two pieces I’m torn between calling “my favorite” this year. Can you guess which ones?

Also, I literally couldn’t grind like this without an amazing partner, mother, and nanny. So pray for everyone in my inner circle, they been grinding too!

If you’d like to attend the fair or know anyone who lives in the DMV pleaseeee share this with them! I got tickets to give away and will be alongside a bunch of other talented creatives! Booth # 2, you can’t miss me!😝 taken in Gallery Place - Chinatown, Washington, DC by @mindofmila
