You can have the cleanest math in the world.
A fully funded number.
A guardrails system built by an actual financial advisor.
And you can still lie awake at 2am wondering "what if."
Here's the thing: that fear isn't a math problem. It's an open loop. And open loops don't close themselves, they get closed when you write down the actual answer.
Not "will the market crash."
We know it might.
The real question is what would you DO if it did.
What's your floor number?
Who do you call first?
What's the bridge back to work if you need one?
Most people in the FI community have run every calculator known to mankind and never once written that plan down.

I think being frugal vs cheap is about whether you’re inconveniencing others. And, if whether your savings really makes an impact. In my case, living in a cheap apartment and driving an older used car, doesn’t bother anybody but it really does move the needle.
