A glint of gold. Then a hand appeared.

Detecting at the Rodney Cook Memorial rally near Newbury, UK, Nick Berry picked up a crisp two-way signal on his MANTICORE, reading 14 on the VDI.

Turning over the first clump of soil revealed something completely unexpected. What emerged was this remarkable hand-shaped gold artefact, just 32mm long and weighing 1.66g.

Its exact age and identity are still to be established, and the find is now with Nick’s local Finds Liaison Officer for recording under the Portable Antiquities Scheme.

Nick tells the full story of the discovery in the November issue of @treasurehuntingmagazine, taking a closer look at the unusual markings and details that could help reveal more about its past.

12 Roman silver coins uncovered in Cumbria.

At a recent East Durham Detectors event, Mark Wilkinson made a remarkable discovery with his MANTICORE.

What began with three Roman silver coins led to the recovery of a scattered hoard of 12 coins.

A great find and a memorable day for everyone involved.

Gold from more than a foot down.

On a recent trip to Much Wenlock, Shropshire, Ricky Fletcher, AKA Redvan Ric, recovered this large gold band with a diamond using his MANTICORE.

Sitting well over a foot deep, the ring gave Ric a sharper high tone worth investigating.

Also among Ricky’s finds was a Georgius Rex trade weight.

And they just kept coming.

Detecting in the garden of a house dating back to the 1700s in Northern Ireland, Ryan Doherty hit a pocket spill containing 15 coins from the 1940s, with a mix of Irish and English coins emerging from the ground.

For Ryan, though, the best part wasn’t simply the number of coins.

His daughter was there to share the moment as one coin after another appeared, turning a great detecting find into a memory they’ll both take home with them.

From hearing about history to getting out and finding it.

A great couple of days in Cheltenham supporting @romanfound at @cheltfestivals Cheltenham Literature Festival, alongside our partners at @lpmetaldetecting.

On Sunday, Roman Found were joined by archaeologist Mark Horton to discuss their book Things We Found in the Ground. The following day at @dunkertonspark was all about getting hands-on with metal detecting, with many attendees trying the hobby for the very first time.

Participants headed into the field with the VANQUISH 360 to search for hidden tokens, learn something new and meet fellow enthusiasts along the way.

There was also an opportunity to learn more about identifying and recording finds, with guidance from Kurt Adams of Bristol City Museum, before heading back for prizes.

A big thank you to Roman Found, LP Metal Detecting, Dunkertons, the festival organisers and everyone who helped make it a great event.

An Amsterdam maker's mark on a Thames find.

Mudlarker Joe Allen recovered this Dutch pewter spoon from the Thames foreshore in London, using his MANTICORE with the 8” coil.

Made in Amsterdam, the spoon carries a kleine keur maker's mark, although the maker remains unidentified.

An interesting glimpse into the objects that found their way to London over the centuries.

The signal was still there. Could there be another?

Just 15 minutes into his first detecting session in three weeks, UK detectorist Ethan Gee, uncovered an 1891 gold half sovereign with his MANTICORE.

But when he checked the hole again, the same signal was still coming through.

Another look revealed a second gold half sovereign, dated 1892.

What a way to return to detecting. Congratulations, Ethan.
