I have a poor sense of direction and have, more than once, called @edwardcp2 when I got lost on a MTB and needed help finding my way out of the woods. Still, when I tried out orienteering at a @navigationgames event in the summer of 2024, I really enjoyed it and continued doing beginner and advanced beginner courses on trails at local meets.

This past summer I found out that @orienteering_usa nationals would be at @rockywoods_trustees and @hale.1918 and decided it would be fun to try to “compete” in my age group. This meant I needed to learn to go off-trail on intermediate courses (I did two) and then had ~5 weeks to focus on achieving a low level of competence at advanced courses.

After many hours of training and “racing” in the woods (including two advanced courses I couldn’t finish before the time limit), 2.5 glorious hours leveling up my navigation skills with my new teammate Channon (New England Orienteering), and more hours reading books and watching Swedish instructional videos with subtitles — I did it! I completed the middle and long distance forest courses at nationals, both with 15 controls, under the time limit. This is the most excited I’ve ever been about finishing DFL, at least since I did that 50k skate race in the spring.

The orienteering community is really welcoming and I strongly recommend this sport to any of my friends who enjoy outdoor scavenger hunts (on foot or in a canoe or on a MTB or on XC skis — but usually on foot). I made a spur-of-the-moment decision last week to do one more xc ski race and since I had to drive all the way to MSA for it, I went big: 50k skate. As I sat in the school bus to the start, surrounded by excited skiers speaking French, I felt so grateful to be there — which was only possible due to 15ish months of working with @chris.city. The trails were perfect, the race was super hard, and I was pretty happy to collect my participation medal when I finished DFL. All the @laclassiquealexharvey and MSA staff were so kind.
