A few glimpses of "What We Carry" in process.

This piece began with inspiration from the Berber women of Morocco—their adornment, craftsmanship, cultural memory, and sense of sisterhood back in 2023.

As the work evolved, it became something more personal—a meditation on motherhood, connection, and the things we carry with us, both inherited and chosen.

A reminder, especially now, of the power women hold in our connection to one another.

Nineteen years! What began as a temporary teaching gig has grown into one of the greatest honors of my professional life: helping build and shape the Visual Arts program at Marlborough, first as a teacher, and now as both Department Chair and Gallery Director.

Over nearly two decades, this place has become so much more than a workplace. It has been a space for experimentation, growth, collaboration, and possibility—and a community that has continually challenged and inspired me.

I’m especially excited to celebrate this next chapter with IN THE MAKING, an exhibition that brings together the work, processes, and possibilities of our Visual Arts faculty. It feels fitting to share not just what we make, but how we make it—and all the uncertainty, discovery, and joy that happens along the way.

Please join us for the artist reception on Saturday, October 10th from 1-3pm.

1+1=2 Kyla Hansen+Chelsea Dean in The Dinner Party

Kyla Hansen’s densely fabricated assemblage sculptures and vibrant, quilted wall works use the desert landscape of the American West as a lens through which to examine narrative, gender and class. Her work employs language and aesthetics of rural and urban environments to explore disparities in perception and experience as the global population shifts from rural to urban. Hansen’s text-based quilted works reference patterned architectural anomalies of deteriorating desert interiors and exteriors; collaging together letter forms, clothing remnants, architectural fragments, spray painted lines, neon lights, and fabric, to evoke the patched-together-nature of Mojave Desert ghost houses. Hansen’s sculptures place found objects next to or incorporated into densely worked ‘craft’ materials such as hand-carved wood, ceramics, or cast and synthetic materials that could be found at any hardware store. Her amalgamations mimic natural forms, blurring lines between the found and fabricated.

Chelsea Dean earned her BA in Studio Art from the University of Puget Sound and MFA in Drawing from Claremont Graduate University. Dean’s studio practice includes printmaking, drawing, photography, sculpture, and collage, exploring architecture, home life, personal artifacts, and the decay of domestic ideals.

My current body of work explores systems that erode and the conflict between order and entropy. Inspiration is found where I live and work in Southern California. Iconic Mid Century architecture and design, shelters built by optimistic homesteaders now abandoned, evidence of domesticity, discarded personal artifacts, and the arid landscape, which is both brutal and sublime—my exploration, documentation, and imagining of these elements are incorporated into the work. Combining photographs, experimental printmaking, drawing, collage techniques, and installation, I assign new meaning. The work reveals both beauty and decay, dimensionally layering information spatially, revealing elements of the original object or ideal, as well as imagination of its inevitable destruction.

I am so thrilled to have the opportunity to exhibit my work alongside @__kylahansen__ again in this very special 2-year anniversary exhibition @themiddleroomgallery that centers around community, connection, and camaraderie. What a beautiful and timely offering, @shannonraefincke.

The Dinner Party is a large group exhibition of 44 paired works, comprised of 22 LA-based artists who have shown at The Middle Room over our first two years, alongside 22 other artists of their choice.

The exhibition will be on view from September 26 - October 26, 2025 with a reception this Friday, October 3, from 6-8pm.

The timing of this exhibition also happens to fall on the 6-year anniversary of the exhibition that Kyla and I collaborated on, “Golden Hour.”

Here’s to keeping creativity alive and well as an act of resistance and joy. Come raise a glass with all the artists on Friday. by @minifunk

Back in the drawing game after 7 years(!!) and I have to say, I’m pretty darn excited. My subject and work have been quietly evolving these past two years, but have recently become clearer than ever. I’m looking forward to following the bread crumbs and seeing where it all goes. This 22x30 inch piece promises to keep me busy for a while. ✏️🖤⚡️
