Join us Friday, October 23rd at 7 PM! Mint Theater Company presents a reading of DIANA OF DOBSON’S, introduced by J. Ellen Gainor, whose recommendation in 2001 helped revive this remarkable play.

25 years ago, Mint brought Cicely Hamilton’s DIANA OF DOBSON’S back to the stage—and the audience loved it! The New York Times described it as “surprisingly fresh entertainment,” and The Village Voice recognized it as “another tasty sprig in the Mint’s growing patch of discoveries.”

Our director, Britt Berke, shares with us her favorite Cicely Hamilton quote.

Hamilton (1872-1952) was an actor, an author, and a crusader for women’s rights who believed that true progress requires recognizing a woman “as a responsible human being with an individuality and interests of her own.” She wrote several plays tackling social issues. Phyllis Chester is a fierce character who does just that in PHYL!

“I’d just as soon be looked down upon for being wicked as be looked down upon for being poor.”

PHYL was set to premiere at Oxford in 1913, but the performance was forbidden. Fortunately, the Lord Chamberlain’s office kept a copy of every play submitted for approval, now held at the British Library—and that’s where we found it.

Previews of PHYL have started —Witness its return! Grab your tickets with our link in bio!
