Mira M. Yang’s exhibition „Ensemble", currently on view at the Kunsthalle Friart Fribourg, will open soon with a second chapter at the Fondation Pernod Ricard in Paris. Conceived as an exhibition which is built around a body of new sound sculptures, film works, and historical ephemera staged in two chapters, „Ensemble“ is about processes of cultural transmission, about histories and images that are themselves in transit, wandering.

Please join us for the opening at the Fondation Pernod Ricard in Paris on November 23!

Both chapters are curated by Kathrin Bentele.

Mira M. Yang spoke to @thomas_patier for @artforum about their stunning solo exhibition 'Ensemble', which is currently on view @kunsthallefriartfribourg through November 13 and will succeedingly open in a second iteration @fondationpernodricard , Paris, on November 23, 2026. Both exhibitions are curated by @kathrinbentele 🤍

For “Ensemble,” M. Yang delved into the life and work of Korean dancer Choi Seung-hee (1911–1969), whose renditions of pan-Asian classical dances, performed worldwide, became a global sensation during the late 1930s (she once shared a New York stage with Martha Graham). While many of these dances were approximations of sorts—often adapted to Westerners’ exoticized ideas of East Asia—Choi’s works were also a clear precursor of today’s globalized cultural field. By using information and clues gleaned from dance programs and rare performance images left behind by Choi and her collaborators in Paris, M. Yang created multiple bodies of work that freely reinterpret elements from Choi’s long-forgotten choreographies.

– Thomas Patier

“Ensemble,” the title of both this installation and the exhibition, refers to a group of musicians making music together, addressing the broader question of how we can live together in society. It is not about producing a cohesive documentation of Choi’s work and legacy, but a hallucinatory, momentary, fragmented experience. I wanted to look at bodies and archives that have historically been exoticized and objectified in order to translate them through my own perspective and moment in time. Reanimating or restaging this material through performance is a way of countering totalizing pictures of Choi, her legacy, and imperialist ideology.

‘Transmissions’ traces moments from the journey Paula and I went on, whenever we could meet over the last two years, to move through Musée Guimet, through Jardin d’agronomie tropicale, through early morning crowds of tourists in front of theatre Chaillot and la tour Eiffel, through the 13th district of Paris, through lessons with pan-asian traditional dancers, through Chris Markers portraits of North Korean women, through programme booklets of the solos that modern dancer Choi Seung Hee presented in Paris 87 years ago, leaving some of her wit, her beauty, her costumes, her strategic self exoticisations, her sampling of modernist and traditional dances, her sorceress, her drunken father, her courtesan, her bodddhissatva, her knife dance, her renderings of the colonial and imperialist gazes on asian femininity with us, which we re-assembled, re-imagined into the strange dance that is ‘Transmissions’.

currently on view in ‘Ensemble’ at @kunsthallefriartfribourg and soon in Paris @fondationpernodricard curated by @kathrinbentele

We’re delighted to invite you to a conversation between Mira M. Yang and Filipa Ramos, taking place on Saturday, October 10, at 4pm.

The conversation is conceived in the context of Mira M. Yang’s exhibition „Ensemble“ and draws from M. Yang and Ramos's shared interest in aspects of memory, time, history, and the act of looking, as well as from their longstanding engagement with the work of the French filmmaker Chris Marker (1921–2012). The exhibition offers a point of departure to discuss the more-than-human as a generative dimension of Mira M. Yang’s recent practice: As the works in „Ensemble“ treat human movement as a score, they blur the distinction between what is human and what is not.

Mira M. Yang is a visual artist based in Paris. Their work has been staged and exhibited at Manifesta16 Ruhr Biennial (2026); Busan Biennale, Busan, South Korea (2026); Bonner Kunstverein, Bonn (2026); King’s Leap, New York (2026); Musée de l’Art et de l’Histoire, Geneva (2025); The Jewish Museum of Belgium, Brussels (2025); Drei, Cologne (2025); Klosterruine, Berlin (2024); 15th Gwangju Biennial, Gwangju (2024); Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, Düsseldorf (2024); or Fondation Fiminco & Frac Ile de France, Romainville/Paris (2024).

Filipa Ramos is a writer and curator whose long-term research investigates art's relationship to ecology. She is particularly interested in animals and time-based media. Ramos teaches at the Art Institute at the FHNW Academy of Art and Design, Basel and is Curator of the 2027 edition of LIAF and co-curator of the 2028 Bergen Assembly with Lucia Pietroiuisti. Ramos's recent projects include "BESTIARI", the Catalan representation at the 60th Venice Biennale (2024) or "Songs for the Changing Seasons" for the 1. Klima Biennale Wien (2024). Her most recent book, "The Artist as Ecologist" (2025), discusses the ways in which contemporary artists embrace environmentalism.

Looking back on the residency of Mira M. Yang (@mira.mann), ahead of the opening of their exhibition ‘Ensemble’ at Kunsthalle Friart in Fribourg (@kunsthallefriartfribourg) this Friday, September 11.

“Mountain gods and peaks, accidentally doubled moons and suns, characters hatching out of golden eggs, forbidden love, a girlish prince and the strange wonders occurring under their reign, a woman who was formerly a bear, conversations under stars, a dystopic heatwave and its storms, primordial heron cries... are a few glimpses into the wonders that sprawled out at me at La Becque, from the place, its animals and people, and from a book of Korean oral folk tales that I brought with me, written down in the 13th century by the monk Ilyeon as a mystical supplement to official historical records.

I read ‘Samguk Yusa’ at La Becque while projecting connections through landscape and mythology, amidst a place that looks vaguely similar to the one many of the book’s legends originate from: the mountain volcano lake Cheonji, Heaven Lake, which, bisected by the border of China and DPRK since the Pacific and Cold War, remains foreclosed or mostly reachable through myths and memories.” — Mira M. Yang

During their residency, Mira also worked on the sonification of re-imagined dances by Choi Seung-Hee, developing a pneumatic machine and architecture for the exhibition in Fribourg.

‘Ensemble’ is co-produced with Fondation Pernod Ricard in Paris (@fondationpernodricard), where a second chapter of the exhibition will be presented from November 24, 2026 to February 6, 2027.

Karaoke Falsetto, 2026
single channel colour video and sound recording on DMM copper vinyl, 22min;; on view until october @manifestabiennial Marienkirche Essen-Karnap, in the baptistery and priest’s backstage dressing room, curated by Leonie Herweg and René Block

„…The work considers voice as something that shifts across contexts: between music and subculture, between human and non-human sound, between different languages and forms of expression. It is connected to the stained-glass window in the baptistery, which depicts a dove – a symbol of the Holy Spirit and of the Pentecostal idea of speaking in many tongues – extending questions of voice, listening, and transmission across the space.“

Interdisciplinary visual artist Mira M. Yang (@mira.mann) has been in residence at La Becque since May as part of our Principal Residency Program.

Born in Germany and living between Paris and Düsseldorf, Mira M. Yang is currently researching and translating Korean creation myths from a North Korean mountain region in collaboration with their mother, a Korean translator. These shamanic narratives, recounting the mythic origins of the universe, will be developed into a sonic interpretation in partnership with two musicians.

By reconnecting with ancestral stories of human-animal-nature entanglement, the project reflects on geopolitical division, particularly the ongoing tensions on the Korean peninsula and their broader global resonances. The mountains and lake surrounding La Becque provide a resonant landscape for exploring the symbolic and transcendental dimensions of these myths.

This summer, they will also present new works at Manifesta 16 Ruhr (@manifestabiennial), opening on June 21.

Join us on July 25 for our Summer Open Studios and discover Mira’s work in progress alongside those of our current residents.

Meet Mira M. Yang (@mira.mann), who will be in residence at La Becque as part of the Principal Residency Program from May to July 2026.

Born in Germany, Mira M. Yang lives and works between Paris and Düsseldorf. Their multidisciplinary practice spans live performance, moving image, scenography, and objects, exploring questions of cultural hybridity, representation, memory, and the instrumentalization of canonized history. Through fictional spaces and storytelling, Mira M. Yang visualizes social structures, collective memory, and new narratives within shifting identities. Their discursive scenographies probe transcultural relations between human and non-human agents, examining the “glitches” that emerge between experience and memory, reality and fiction.

Mira M. Yang’s work has been presented internationally, including at the 15th Gwangju Biennale (@gwangjubiennale), FriArt (Fribourg, @kunsthallefriartfribourg), Serpentine (London, @serpentineuk), Brücke Museum (Berlin, @brueckemuseum), among many others across Europe and Asia.
