Mira M. Yang’s exhibition „Ensemble", currently on view at the Kunsthalle Friart Fribourg, will open soon with a second chapter at the Fondation Pernod Ricard in Paris. Conceived as an exhibition which is built around a body of new sound sculptures, film works, and historical ephemera staged in two chapters, „Ensemble“ is about processes of cultural transmission, about histories and images that are themselves in transit, wandering.

Please join us for the opening at the Fondation Pernod Ricard in Paris on November 23!

Both chapters are curated by Kathrin Bentele.

Mira M. Yang spoke to @thomas_patier for @artforum about their stunning solo exhibition 'Ensemble', which is currently on view @kunsthallefriartfribourg through November 13 and will succeedingly open in a second iteration @fondationpernodricard , Paris, on November 23, 2026. Both exhibitions are curated by @kathrinbentele 🤍

For “Ensemble,” M. Yang delved into the life and work of Korean dancer Choi Seung-hee (1911–1969), whose renditions of pan-Asian classical dances, performed worldwide, became a global sensation during the late 1930s (she once shared a New York stage with Martha Graham). While many of these dances were approximations of sorts—often adapted to Westerners’ exoticized ideas of East Asia—Choi’s works were also a clear precursor of today’s globalized cultural field. By using information and clues gleaned from dance programs and rare performance images left behind by Choi and her collaborators in Paris, M. Yang created multiple bodies of work that freely reinterpret elements from Choi’s long-forgotten choreographies.

– Thomas Patier

“Ensemble,” the title of both this installation and the exhibition, refers to a group of musicians making music together, addressing the broader question of how we can live together in society. It is not about producing a cohesive documentation of Choi’s work and legacy, but a hallucinatory, momentary, fragmented experience. I wanted to look at bodies and archives that have historically been exoticized and objectified in order to translate them through my own perspective and moment in time. Reanimating or restaging this material through performance is a way of countering totalizing pictures of Choi, her legacy, and imperialist ideology.

You spend your life searching for exhibitions that matter, that do more than just assembling objects and ideas, that treat the exhibition at at artwork in itself, a device capable of causing wonder, excitement and the desire to see and know more. Mira M Yang’s show “Ensemble” does that while crossing cultures, rituals, places and practices that question and reinvent one another. The display is stunning, the laps between past and present so accurate, the balance between seriousness and humour is so great, and so much work to make all these instruments, puppets, automatons and rays of light fall into the right place. The show is still up @kunsthallefriartfribourg for a few weeks and then it will travel to Paris. The joy!

„if words are to be sounded“ with Pierre Allain, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, Claire Fontaine, Shadi Harouni, and Mira M. Yang is now on show in its second iteration at GAK Bremen.
The joint exhibition project by CAP • Saint-Fons, GAK Gesellschaft für Aktuelle Kunst Bremen, and Le 19, Crac, Montbéliard explores language as a performative medium of the imaginary. Permeated by themes of memory, borders, resistance, vulnerability, and transmission, the works gathered address the value—and values—of words, exploring the possibility of redefining relationships.

On show at GAK until 10 January 2027.
Then traveling on to Montbéliard for spring.

St. Marien in Essen hit every sense at once, scent and sound deepened by the church's dark aura. I lingered at the organ pipes for a long time, playing my own dissonant soundscape. The church is slated for demolition, which turns the works shown here into a rare farewell.
A building on the verge of disappearing has seldom sounded this alive.

It's the last days of @manifestabiennial and the last chance to encounter Mira M. Yang's newly commissioned film and sound work Karaoke Falsetto (2026) at St. Marien in Essen-Karnap.

Developed in collaboration with soprano and pansori singer So Sol-i and countertenor Choi Seung Ho, the project explores voice as a medium moving between languages, musical traditions and forms of belonging. Drawing on birdsong, Korean pansori, opera and experimental vocal practices, Karaoke Falsetto unfolds through a newly produced film and a live performance staged within the church.

Manifesta 16 Ruhr runs until October 4, 2026 across the Ruhr region, transforming twelve former church buildings into spaces for artistic production, gathering and exchange. The exhibition at St. Marien is curated by @leonieherweg and René Block.

Join us tonight, 6–9pm, at Kunsthalle Friart Fribourg for the opening of Mira M. Yang's solo exhibition 'Ensembe', curated by Kathrin Bentele.

Ensemble
Mira M. Yang
with Theresa Hak Kyung Cha
September 12 – November 13, 2026
Kunsthalle Friart Fribourg

Mira M. Yang develops work that engages with cultural transfer, memory, and belonging from a diasporic perspective. It emanates from something performative or staged, which holds the image of a transmission. To perform, in this sense, means to transmit signals, energies, and affects. It is often a performing body that acts as the transceiver, although more recently M. Yang has also used animated sculptures made from machine parts as surrogates for absent human bodies.

For the exhibition Ensemble, which will be presented in two chapters at the Kunsthalle Friart Fribourg and the Fondation Pernod Ricard in Paris, M. Yang has developed new sound assemblages and a film, which are being shown in varying configurations.

To stay with the image of transmission, this also harbors the danger of a disturbance, interruption, or noise in which the signal is lost and becomes inaudible. M. Yang’s work marks moments of historical amnesia and absence, giving them a form that, although unable to restore what is lost, puts something else in its place. Various surrogate bodies and substitutes emerge in the exhibition, in which cultural heritage reverberates as an echo, a trace, or a sediment. The unresolved codings and images they contain demand a nuanced reconsideration.

Looking back on the residency of Mira M. Yang (@mira.mann), ahead of the opening of their exhibition ‘Ensemble’ at Kunsthalle Friart in Fribourg (@kunsthallefriartfribourg) this Friday, September 11.

“Mountain gods and peaks, accidentally doubled moons and suns, characters hatching out of golden eggs, forbidden love, a girlish prince and the strange wonders occurring under their reign, a woman who was formerly a bear, conversations under stars, a dystopic heatwave and its storms, primordial heron cries... are a few glimpses into the wonders that sprawled out at me at La Becque, from the place, its animals and people, and from a book of Korean oral folk tales that I brought with me, written down in the 13th century by the monk Ilyeon as a mystical supplement to official historical records.

I read ‘Samguk Yusa’ at La Becque while projecting connections through landscape and mythology, amidst a place that looks vaguely similar to the one many of the book’s legends originate from: the mountain volcano lake Cheonji, Heaven Lake, which, bisected by the border of China and DPRK since the Pacific and Cold War, remains foreclosed or mostly reachable through myths and memories.” — Mira M. Yang

During their residency, Mira also worked on the sonification of re-imagined dances by Choi Seung-Hee, developing a pneumatic machine and architecture for the exhibition in Fribourg.

‘Ensemble’ is co-produced with Fondation Pernod Ricard in Paris (@fondationpernodricard), where a second chapter of the exhibition will be presented from November 24, 2026 to February 6, 2027.
