What a way to close out pride month! I had the incredible opportunity to share my story thanks to our friends @nwsl through the NWSL x @mothstories Loud and Proud event. Thank you to everyone who worked hard to make the event a success and for giving us a platform to be vulnerable, curious, loud, and PROUD 🌈❤️ #pridemonth #story #soccer taken in District West by @miranda.freedman

En Garde.

Miranda Wynne Freedman has spent her entire collegiate career in a fighting stance — not against opponents, but against every system that told athletes they had to leave part of themselves at the door to compete.

Tonight, she puts the guard down.

A medically retired Division I fencer, Team Captain, founder of EmpowHER, President of @buckeyespectrum, Athlete Ally 2025 Chapter of the Year recipient, Big Ten LGBTQ+ Equality Symposium presenter, U.S. Surgeon General mental health meeting participant, incoming Clinical Psychology doctoral student, and one of the most quietly powerful advocates in collegiate athletics today — Miranda joins us at Play for Joy to speak to what it means to be both things at once. The athlete and the human. The competitor and the whole person. En garde and finally, fully, at rest.

This is for every student-athlete who has ever been asked to choose.

Tonight, we choose everything. Play for Joy — A community-centered space at the intersections of sport, identity, and creativity.

Liberation. Healing. Belonging.🖤

Tonight. Doors open. Come as you are.

RSVP link in bio — see you there.

Sport has never been just a game.

It has been survival. Resistance. Healing. Community. Identity. Joy.

The Scatter Joy Project & Good Trouble Collective are coming together to honor that truth — and to build something new from it.

We’re creating an intentional, community-centered space at the intersections of sport, identity, and creativity. Conceptualized for athletes, students, coaches, creatives, and anyone ready to reimagine what sport can be outside of systems rooted solely in performance and productivity.

For those who have ever felt like they had to shrink to compete.

For those who found themselves — or lost themselves — through sport.

For those who know that joy is not separate from justice — it’s essential to it.

Access to and through sport. Radical self-love. Collective care.

We can’t wait to get in good trouble, necessary trouble, with you 🖤

A chapter I don’t know if I’ll ever be fully ready to close….

Making the right decision is not always easy. Prioritizing your health over your passions or commitments, while seemingly simple, is often grueling, heartbreaking, and disappointing. Sometimes, making those decisions can be empowering and hopeful.

Many of you know this, but for the past 6 years I have been dealing with chronic hip pain, recurrent labral tears, impingement, and so much more. I have already had two surgeries to correct these issues yet I have found myself facing another, more invasive operation next month. Competing while dealing with this grueling pain for so long not only takes a toll physically, but emotionally too.

Therefore, after so much consideration, conversation, and reflection, I have come to the decision to forfeit my last year of eligibility and medically retire from fencing.

This was not a decision I came to lightly, and I am still grieving. I have so much unfinished business but it is at a point where I have to make the right choice for my future. I also want to express my gratitude for all of the support I have received during my fencing journey and this new chapter I am navigating.

@sfreedman418 I would never have starting this sport if not for you. There is so much I want to say but I’m just going to leave this here: who would have thought grocery store aisles would have turned into this.

@ohiostatefencing Thank you for the most incredible four years. I owe so much of my growth and development as a person, student, and athlete to you.

@elvisgregorygil Thank you for believing in me and pushing me.

@renfencing Thank you for molding me into the fencer I was, and for helping me pave the path to international and college fencing.

@mission_fencing Thank you for being the first to show me why this sport is so amazing.

To my family, my fencing family, and friends: thank you for cheering me on, the tournament fruit snacks, and lending a shoulder to cry on whenever I needed it.

If you made it to this point, thank you. This is not how I wanted my fencing journey to end, but now I am on a path to heal myself and others.

And as always, Go Bucks❤️ by @miranda.freedman
