This is UNESCO-listed Merv in Turkmenistan, once a major oasis center and later a capital of the Great Seljuk Empire, with 4000 years of History. This year, UNESCO inscribed Tashkent Modernist Architecture on the World Heritage List, recognizing a group of 10 buildings and urban complexes built between the 1960s and early 1990s. Much of this architecture emerged during Tashkent’s reconstruction following the 1966 earthquake.

One of this mine’s chambers reaches about 295 feet high, with a lake covering much of its floor. Salt was extracted here for centuries before mining ended in 1932.

This is Salina Turda, in Transylvania, Romania. After serving different purposes over time, including as an air-raid shelter during World War II, the former mine opened to the public in 1992.
