“The Illustrated Man” by Ray Bradbury turns 75 this year, and you’re invited to the celebration. The book is a collection of science fiction short stories that discuss the dangers of technology. IU Indianapolis and the Ray Bradbury Center will host a free community reading of the short stories 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the Indiana Historical Society, 450 W Ohio St. Listen to Mirror Indy’s arts and culture podcast to hear Ray Bradbury Center director Jason Aukerman explain why the stories still feel ahead of their time, and how Bradbury is tied to an Elton John song. Indy, the time has come. Leaf pickup will begin Nov. 9 and run through Dec. 4. The collected leaves will go to South Side Landfill, where they will be turned into compost. If you want your leaves picked up, here’s a few tips: - Don’t rake leaves into the street or drains. - Make sure to put them in plastic bags. - Leave your bags 3 to 5 feet away from your trash cart. - Put bags out by 7 a.m. on trash day. During Thanksgiving week, all Thursday routes will move to Friday and all Friday routes will move to Saturday. If crews miss your home or street, call the Mayor’s Action Center at 317-327-4622 or submit a request for pickup on Request Indy. by @mirrorindy
The Ransburg YMCA building is listed for sale at $3.25 million. Ransburg was a community staple for the east side and some residents say it feels like the YMCA has abandoned them. The YMCA of Greater Indianapolis announced the closure on Jan. 22 stating “ongoing financial challenges” made closing the only option. It offered a refrigerated food pantry with fresh produce and a learning center for young children. Ransburg was also a place where neighbors had their morning coffee with friends and played basketball. Some had their first jobs at the Ransburg. Janet Williams said she became a Ransburg member years ago to get healthy. She used the exercise equipment and even learned how to swim there. “Now that I am a senior citizen, I was hoping to be able to use it a lot more because it was a great gathering place for the community,” Williams said. Ransburg was always busy, she said. She doesn’t understand why it closed. by @mirrorindy

Reporters. Not Robots. Local news that's people-powered. Today, we're launching Free Press Indiana's year-end fundraiser to support the people behind our journalism. AI can generate words, but it can't earn a neighbor's trust. No robot can build the understanding that comes from showing up, listening and being accountable to the communities we cover. Donations from readers like you keep our reporters doing that work. Now through Dec. 31, your gift goes twice as far! All donations of $2,500 or less will be matched dollar for dollar, thanks to generous local matching donors. Will you help us start strong? Make a gift today and double your impact. We asked readers for their questions about the Indianapolis schools referendum, and we answered them. IPS and about 60 charter schools are campaigning for it this fall. If it passes, IPS will collect about $46.4 million a year and charter schools will split about $48.5 million. A 2025 state law requires districts to share referendum money based on how many students who live in the district attend charter schools. IPS officials say they will need to make $20 million in cuts whether or not the referendum passes. The union representing IPS teachers announced its support Sept. 18.
