June 14th marked the 2nd Annual Chris-P Hard Enduro, thanks to the incredible efforts and dedication of @jakestanfield_ and @revyridersofficial. It was a raucous good time and @sam_robbie1 took home the A-class win.

Congrats especially to the ladies though. And if you missed @lifebehindbars27 ‘s awards ceremony ears, that’s on you.

Also of note: @pilchardtv was beside himself with regret at the loss of his shift lever, forcing a DNF, and @mihai.lsv hit the finish line despite a touch of heat exhaustion thanks to the hot June sun.

Most importantly: Nadine said all competitors made it out of there without a single call for first aid.

A big think in the last weeks on the allure of edginess; here’s the quick and dirty, centred on the question of if I, myself, am edgy.

First, my perception of external perception: Not edgy, and internalized as synonymous with being thought of as compliant, helpful, rule-minding, sober, disciplined, nerdy, and boring. Is this collage an accurate antonym for edgy? Is this an accurate depiction of me?

Next: What’s sexy about being edgy? I think: Having the prerogative to take issue, the courage to take action, and the grit to continue to embody the stance you’ve taken. Do I possess and exemplify these qualities?

It feels fair to say culture has adopted certain hallmarks of edginess: tattoos, leather, lawlessness.. like John Travolta à la Grease, or Johnny Depp in Public Enemies. I’m not about to be cast as the next John(ny) based on street cred but I’m going to argue that’s a shortsighted view:

To choose maths and sciences as a woman is to be one of a handful in upper year courses and subsequent career departments. Extreme sports are also heavily dominated by men, and I am reminded of my trespassing every time I pull on barely-fitting purportedly unisex equipment or feel the automatic expectation that I’ll lag behind. Staying true to a commander-type personality allows me to withstand this but makes for a broken record of reminders regarding a lack of (feminine) softness. And as I refuse the pressure to conceal my intellect, I feel the intimidation result in a shift toward othering. This is my path and it finds plenty of resistance and scorn but seems to lack an accompanying ubiquitous cultural aura.

In conclusion: It’s hot when we dare to be different. And if we’re lauding audacity and tenacity then smashing the mould deserves at least as much revere as breaking the rules. Hold the revolutionary women around you up high.
