At about 9pm on 15 July 2011, Mum and Dad reported Dan missing. We desperately tried to communicate the seriousness of the situation; to explain that he was worthy of the police and public’s attention. We needed people all over Australia to know how special and important he was.

At 9:06pm on 15 July 2021 (last night), the BBC World Service broadcast a 41-min interview with me for Outlook — their program that tells ā€˜extraordinary first person stories from around the world’ (often covering iconic people and stories that form the basis of books, films and series). An amazing way to mark a decade without Dan. Now millions of people all over the world know how special and important he was.

Thank you for giving him and us your attention over the past 10 years x

What an amazing day for @missedaus !! Thank you to everyone who came, we are stoked to share that we raised over 2.5k for the charity! All of this was done because of one of our amazing coach’s @mk.rubae - we can’t sing her praises loud enough for facilitating all of this. The Greer Games for Missed in Motion šŸ‘ŸšŸ‘

Thank you to everyone who helped make the day happen, got involved and donated 🫶

We smashed our fundraising goal of $3,200, representing Mum’s age when she went missing, and raised over $5,000, which will go directly to @missedaus to support families left behind.

Shoutout to the content queen of the day (and CEO) Loren, for capturing it all šŸ“ø

There are some causes you don’t just support… you show up for.

Anyone who knows me knows I have always and always will, be up for anything that helps raise money, awareness and support for people who need it. And today was absolutely no exception.

When a friend told me about this fundraiser supporting families left behind by the devastating number of people who go missing in Australia, I knew I had to be there.

150 people. Every single day.

Today, we didn’t just talk about it. We fought for it.
The sparring session was powerful, emotional, exhausting and, at times, pretty bloody brutal! But that was the point. Every punch, every round and every person who stepped into that ring helped shine a light on something that desperately needs more awareness.

Because behind every statistic is a person.

And behind every missing person are families left searching, wondering, grieving and trying to keep going while their entire lives are turned upside down.
That’s why the work of The Missed Foundation matters so much.

The Missed Foundation works to humanise missing loved ones and provide practical and emotional support to the families and communities left behind. They remind us that these aren’t just numbers or statistics.. these are real people, real families and real lives.

And for me, being part of something like this means even more because of my two boys.
I want my sons to grow up understanding that looking after each other matters.

And a HUGE call out to The Missed Foundation for the incredible work you do to make sure missing people are never reduced to a statistic, and that the families who are left behind know they are not alone.

Because sometimes showing someone they matter starts with simply showing up.
For the missing.
For the families.
For our kids.
For every person who might be struggling silently.
For all of us.

✨National Missing Persons Week✨

The sad fact is we can’t get enough of a good missing persons story. We all love a twisty Netflix series or a true crime podcast we binge, or a book we can’t put down until we find out what happens.

But the reality of when a loved one goes missing is tortuous: the families left behind still waiting, searching, endlessly grieving and hoping their loved one will return.

This week is National Missing Persons Week, and I want to talk about what psychologists call ambiguous loss. The grief that comes with no body, no funeral, and no closure. Just an unbearable in-between state where hope and grief have to live side by side, sometimes for decades. It’s considered one of the most traumatic forms of loss there is, because there’s no ritual to help you move through it, only rumination, and the exhausting work of holding on and letting go at the same time.

I saw this firsthand as a former Deputy State Coroner. I witnessed the devastating impact on families who didn’t know if they were planning a search or a funeral. It never leaves you.

That’s why I’m proud to be on the board of The Missed Foundation, founded by Loren O’Keeffe after her brother Dan went missing in 2011. For 15 years Loren has turned her own unimaginable experience into real support for families living this. Practical guides, therapeutic tools, and advocacy that treats missing persons as the public health issue it is.

If true crime has ever kept you up late at night either reading a book, binging a tv show or listening to a podcast, I ask that you redirect some of that energy this week, and if you can, make a donation to the people doing the real work behind the headlines.

It's National Missing Persons Week and we cherish these words from its founder, Brian Jones.

As we get ready for our respective fundraising activities throughout the week, please spare a moment for Tony Jones and his loving family, who created such an important legacy.

We are privileged to be welcomed into the lives of families going through this devastating loss, and we are so grateful for the support of this community.

Thank you for helping us do this work šŸ™ by @missedaus

After the great success of last year’s event, we’re inviting Melbourne’s Muay Thai community to come together again to help us smash out 150 sparring rounds in recognition of the 150 Aussies reported missing every day.

The Missed Foundation @missedaus is the only charity providing specialised support to the families of long-term missing Australians and we’re fundraising to help them keep doing this critical work.

All gyms, all levels — everyone’s welcome. Secure your spot via the link in bio.

Let’s get it! šŸ‘ŠšŸ½šŸ‘ŠšŸ½ by @missedaus
